The German Association for Guard and Show Dance e. V. (DVG) was founded on September 4, 1986, initially as the German Association for Guard Dance Sport - the aim was to practice carnival dance as a dance sport. The association had its big day one year later, when the then President Christa Schmidt-Holzhauer and the President of the German Dance Sports Association (DTV) Günter Meinen signed the framework agreement on September 5, 1987 , with which the DVG as a professional association with special tasks in the German Dance Sports Association and was thus included in the German Sports Association. Guard dance became a recognized sport.

The young dance sport enjoyed great popularity nationwide. Not only dancers from carnival clubs, but also dance groups and soloists from gymnastics clubs are becoming more and more interested in dance as it is practiced in the DVG. In addition to the guard dance, the show dances have become increasingly important. This was taken into account in 1996: The German Association for Guard Dance became the German Association for Guard and Show Dance .

The high level of athletic and dance performance of the formations and soloists from the DVG clubs is presented at the nationwide rankings and masters tournaments, the state championships, German championships and European championships - the guard and show dance sport has established itself among the competitive sports disciplines in German dance sport association conquered.
