Spring football

Spring football (also called shuttlecock ) is a team sport in which an attempt is made to hit a ball (spring football) that is specially used in this sport, mainly with the foot, but also with the knee or chest, and more rarely with the head, into the opposing half of a badminton field To play on the ground or to force the opposing team to make a mistake. Mainly three against three is played, but the two against two and one against one variants are also pursued in the competition.

history

The sport of spring football comes from Asia, probably China, where it is very popular under the name Jianzi . The roots are believed to be in the Cuju (Ts'u Chü) , a sport that is similar to today's football. The history of spring football goes back almost 3000 years.

The engineer Peter von Rüden from Hagen got to know the game on a vacation trip in 1984 and brought spring football to Europe. He first presented spring football to the public at the German Gymnastics Festival in Dortmund and has since spread the sport in Germany and Europe.

In 1999 the International Shuttlecock Federation (ISF) was founded in Hanoi as a world association. In the same year, the founding meeting of the German Spring Football Association (DFFB) took place in Hagen . Founding members were Volker Hollmann, Harald Felgenhauer, Olaf Völzmann, Barbara Figge, Karsten-Thilo Raab, Peter von Rüden (all Federfußballclub Hagen 1991 eV), Axel Krüger (Dortmunder TG) and Nadine Fischer and Ulrich Fischer (both TV Lipperode).

Peter von Rüden is the first President of the DFFB (Deutscher Federfußball-Bund) and the SFE (Shuttlecock Federation of Europe). Spring football is played in some European countries, e.g. B. Finland , France , Greece , Austria , Serbia-Montenegro , Slovakia , Romania , Hungary . There are German Open, Hungarian Open, French Open, Austrian Open, European championships and also world championships.

The first world championships took place in 2000 in Újszász in Hungary. In 2002, the spring football club Hagen 1991 eV hosted the third World Cup from October 20 to 26, in which the national teams from China, Vietnam, Laos, Hong Kong, Cambodia, Hungary, Finland, France, Greece and Germany took part.

The host of the first European championships in 2003 was SKF Weitmar . The venue was Bochum .

matchfield

The dimensions and lines of the official playing field correspond to those of a badminton field , with the lateral boundaries corresponding to the dimensions of the field played in badminton doubles, the rear line to those of the rear service line in doubles. This results in dimensions of 6.10 x 11.88 meters. The playing field is divided in the middle by a net. The net height is set at 1.60 meters for men and 1.50 meters for women. The lines of attack are at a distance of 2 meters from the network.

There should be at least 2 meters of free space around the field without any obstacles and 6 meters above the field.

ball

The spring football

The spring football consists of two parts: a spring part and a black rubber foot. The feather part consists of four goose feathers cut in half and tied together in a cross shape, which are glued into a holder on the black rubber disc. The round rubber foot, measuring 4 cm in diameter and 1.5 cm in height, consists of two rubber washers that are held together by the rubber holder for the springs. The upper rubber washer is loosely placed on the lower one and is separated from it by cardboard or newspaper rings.

The height of the entire ball is around 15 cm, the weight is around 15 grams.

Teams

A team consists of three people who, similar to the rotation rules in volleyball , are assigned positions. If the right to serve changes from one team to the other, the positions are rotated.

In addition to the popular team game, the two-on-two and one-on-one variants are also played. If only two players face each other on each side, the rotation rule does not apply. Otherwise, the rules and regulations apply to the two-on-two game without any changes.

Even if there is only one person facing each other on each half of the field, the rules that apply to team games are applied.

Course of the game

The team scores a point if it either plays the ball properly on the ground in the opposing half of the field, or if the opposing team makes a mistake.

The following events are counted as mistakes by a team:

  • The ball is played so that it touches the ground or any object outside the field of play (“out”).
  • The ball is played more than four times within a team (“five”).
  • The ball is played more than twice in a row by the same person (“three”).
  • A player touches the net.
  • A player enters the airspace above or below the net.
  • The ball touches a player's arm or hand.
  • The ball does not completely cross the center line in the air space above the net.
  • The ball is actively headed over the net without the player in question being completely behind the line of scrimmage. The player may, however, jump into the air space between the line of attack and the net and play the ball with his head there, provided that his feet were completely behind the line of attack when he took off.
  • The serving player's feet are not completely behind the baseline when serving.
  • The serve touches the net.

The winner of a game is the team that won two sets first. A set is won when a team scores 21 points. Each side can score, regardless of the right to serve (tie-break). If at the 21st point of a team the other team already has 20 points, play continues until one team has two points more than the other. From a score of 20 to 20, the right to serve changes with each serve, regardless of the point gained.

The side of the field on which the respective teams line up is changed between each set. In the third set the side is changed again during the set as soon as one of the teams has reached eleven points.

referee

The spring football game is presided over by two referees. These have the task of determining point wins and mistakes made by the playing teams. Your decision is binding.

Referee hand signals

In order to clearly indicate to the teams and the spectators why a point or other decision was made, there are a number of referee signs. Some of them are:

  • Point winning - outstretched arm points in the direction of the team that scored the point and will serve next.
  • Ball goes out - the forearms are brought up to the shoulders in a parallel position.
  • The ball touches the playing field - one arm points to the ground in the respective half of the playing field.
  • Player touching the net - hold the surface of the hand on the side of the net where the mistake occurred.
  • Triple touch by a player - three fingers are held up.
  • Five touches - five fingers are held up.

The hand signals are generally carried out with the hand that is on the side of the error.

Play styles

Team game / tournament

The rules above apply to this style of play.

Freestyle

This style is played similarly to the tournament game, but in freestyle you play alone or with any number of other players. There are no opponents.

Various tricks are performed, some combined with acrobatic elements. The ball is adapted to this, it no longer has cardboard or cardboard springs.
