German handball championship 1963

The German handball championship in 1964 was the 15th final round of the German championship in indoor handball for men organized by the DHB . It was played on February 22nd and 23rd in front of 6,000 spectators in the Ostseehalle in Kiel, in a final tournament with a group phase in the preliminary round.

The new title holder was Berliner SV 1892 , who won the final tournament for the third time after the unofficial zone champion title in 1948 and the championship in 1956 . In the final, Berlin won 4: 3 against defending champion THW Kiel .

For the first time in 10 years, the record champions Frisch Auf Göppingen could not qualify for the finals.

mode

The champions of the five regional associations as well as the runner-up of the host association, this year the North German Handball Association, were eligible to participate in the final round . In two preliminary round groups, the first two teams qualified for the semi-finals, the bottom of each group played for fifth place.

The defending champions THW Kiel (regional association champion north), SV Bayer 04 Leverkusen (regional association champion west) and TuS 1860 Neunkirchen (regional association champion south-west) played in preliminary group A.

In the other group, the Berliner SV 1892 (regional / regional association champion Berlin), the Hamburger SV (vice-champion regional association north) and the SG Leutershausen (regional association champion south) met each other.

The playing time was 2 × 20 minutes; in the event of a tie after regular time, an extension was provided.

Tournament course

In the preliminary round it looked as if the THW Kiel could easily head for the fourth title in its own hall and thus maintain the home nimbus: the games against the West German and the southwest German champions were won with confidence. The semi-final against the North German runner-up Hamburger SV was also a new edition of the duel between the two old masters Hein Dahlinger (Kiel, 41 years old) and Otto Maychrzak (Hamburg, 36 years old), who was again the top scorer in the German championship; the defensive strength of the Kieler still prevailed here. In the patience of the final with few goals, however, the Berlin champions turned out to be cleverer and destroyed Kiel's hopes with the winning goal 5 seconds before the final whistle. Together with their player-coach Hein Dahlinger, who was still the guarantee of success in the previous year, the team had passed the zenith of their skills.

The success of the Berliner SV was no coincidence: In the preliminary round, the Berliners played Hamburger SV in a downright dizzy way, leading 7-0 in the first half of the game before HSV was able to make the result a little more bearable. The BSV, on the other hand, needed all his routine in the other preliminary round game: against the newcomers to the final round from Leutershausen, the old master was apparently hopelessly behind with 3 goals at half time, but was able to turn the game into a narrow victory in the second 20 minutes.
