German handball championship 1961

The German handball championship in 1962 was the 13th final round of the German championship in indoor handball for men organized by the DHB . It was played on February 24th and 25th in front of 6,000 spectators in the Ostseehalle in Kiel, in a final tournament with a group phase in the preliminary round.

As in the 1957 finals , the THW Kiel was able to use the home advantage, dominated the big favorites TC Frisch Auf Göppingen at 6: 3 in the final and won his second German championship.

With the lost final, the record champions from Göppingen missed the chance to become title holder for the fifth year in a row. The SV Polizei Hamburg - champions of the first four final tournaments 1950–1953 - retained the record for several decades of having won the most titles in a row, on par with Göppingen (four-time champion 1958–1961). In the 1970s, two other clubs managed to win the title four times in a row, VfL Gummersbach (1973-1976) and TV Großwallstadt (1978-1981). But only the new champion of the 1962 season, THW Kiel, was able to beat the old record series of the first German champion in the 2008/2009 season with the fifth title in a row.

The champions of the five regional associations as well as the runner-up of the host association, this year the North German Handball Association, were eligible to participate in the final round . In two preliminary round groups, the first two teams qualified for the semi-finals, the bottom of each group played for fifth place.

Hamburger SV (regional association champion north), Berliner SV 1892 (regional / regional association champion Berlin) and TSG Haßloch (regional association champion south-west) played in group A.

In the other group, THW Kiel (vice champion regional association north), the defending champion TC Frisch Auf Göppingen (regional association champion south), and TSV Grün-Weiß Dankersen (regional association champion west) met each other.

The playing time was 2 × 20 minutes; in the event of a tie after regular time, an extension was provided.

Tournament course

In the preliminary round group A, Hamburger SV, who competed in a German championship for the first time, clearly prevailed against Berliner SV and made it to the semi-finals undefeated. There the Hamburgers had to admit defeat to Frisch Auf Göppingen only in extra time. An outstanding player who had his second spring after great success with the SV Police Hamburg at the Hamburg competition, the now 34-year-old Otto Maychrzak , played a major role in the team's success . In the game for third place, HSV then lost to TSG Haßloch, which had been defeated in the preliminary round. TSG Haßloch, the club with the most finals ever between 1948 and 1966, repeated the unofficial success of 1948 with third place - when they last qualified for this tournament.

In group B, it was already indicated in the preliminary round that the dominance of the Göppingen, who first appeared in the coaching bench without Bernhard Kempa , was broken: THW Kiel won its supposedly most difficult preliminary round match against the defending champion easily and clearly with 8: 2. At THW, too, a player had a major share in the success who, considering his age, could have had his best times as an athlete: Hein Dahlinger , now 39, made his mark on the tournament. In the final, again against Göppingen, Dahlinger was able to determine the game despite special security and lead the THW to success. The THW led 4-0 up to the second half; Göppingen only scored the first goal in the 26th minute.
