The Hallenbad - Kultur am Schachtweg, usually indoor swimming pool for short , is a cultural center of the city of Wolfsburg in Lower Saxony . It was built in 1963 as an actual indoor swimming pool .

history

The rapidly growing city of Wolfsburg needed an indoor swimming pool in the early 1960s, which was built on Schachtweg in the west of the city center and opened in autumn 1963. The operator was Stadtwerke Wolfsburg. It had a 25 meter long swimming pool with diving boards 1 meter, 3 meters and 5 meters high, as well as a smaller non-swimmer pool, a sauna and a milk bar . There were lawns on his property for sun lovers.

When the self-managed youth center (SJZ) Mitte in Porschestrasse had to give way to the construction of the Südkopfcenter, a new urban center for children and young people, the Kaschpa with the ZAKK café , was set up in the indoor pool in 1986 . For this purpose, the spacious entrance area at the north-west corner of the building was rebuilt and the entrance to the indoor pool was relocated to the north side.

In 2002 the indoor swimming pool was closed in order to secure the financing of the BadeLand . Starting in 2006, it was converted into today's cultural center based on designs by the Wolfsburg architects Neumann-Berking & Bendorf . The main entrance was moved to the side of the city center. On April 20, 2007 the indoor pool was opened as a cultural center.

The indoor pool consists of several building parts and has, among other things, an atrium . The "swimmer's pool" is the largest event room in the indoor pool. With its large glass front it faces west. The "swimmer's pool" is equipped with the tiles of the original swimming pool and is characterized by the parabolic jumping facilities of the former diving pool, which are also shown on the logo of the indoor pool. It is mainly used for art exhibitions, such as light art . The jazz in the pool series of events also takes place in the "swimmer's pool".

The “big stage” in the former non-swimmer pool has seating for up to 1,000 spectators; there are 300 seats at cabaret events. The "small stage" holds 300 people. From Sunday to Thursday, the room with 70 seats is used as a cinema program . The 100 square meter "Sauna Club" in the basement serves as a disco or for concerts and has a capacity of 100 people. The "freiraum" has served as a youth meeting place since 2010 and has its own outdoor area.

The indoor pool includes a restaurant that uses the atrium, among other things. Outside there is the "beer garden" under old linden trees , where there are also performances and film screenings. In the facade of the “Big Stage”, works by regional artists are exhibited in the “Art Showcase” under the direction of the Braunschweig University of Fine Arts .
