Alfred Ernst (officer)
Alfred Ernst (born December 13, 1904 in Bern ; † October 17, 1973 ibid) was a Swiss lawyer , officer ( Oberstkorpsommandant ) and military theorist.
Life
Ernst was born the son of a higher court president. He attended the Free Gymnasium in Bern and studied law at the University of Bern and the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . In 1932 he was promoted to Dr. iur. PhD and admitted to the bar. In 1939 he took over the management of the Germany office of the military intelligence service and in 1940 he was involved in the officers' union and in the national resistance campaign .
From 1947 to 1962 he was a private lecturer in military science at the University of Basel and the University of Bern. In 1949 he also became head of the Army Organization Section in the General Staff Department. In 1962 he became an honorary professor for military science and war history at the University of Bern. In 1956 he was in command of the general staff courses. In 1957 he moved to the 8th Division and in 1965 to Field Army Corps 2 .
Ernst made a name for himself as a military theorist and strategist. He was a fan of static defense. He advocated the deletion of the Jesuit and Monastery Article (1973) from the Federal Constitution.
He was the first president of the Swiss Association for Military History and Science .
The future brigadier Hans-Ulrich Ernst was his son.
