The term black light theater is defined as a special form of theater game , when in a completely darkened room or on a stage is acting with black background.

Light source

The only light source used is black light lamps or tubes ( UV light with a wavelength of around 365 nanometers ), which only illuminate white or neon-colored objects or items of clothing and thus make them visible to the audience. Black paint, on the other hand, is "swallowed", which means that players dressed in black remain invisible in this light. In this way, amazing effects and illusions can be created: objects (or people) seem to float, appear or suddenly disappear.

Black light theater in its purest form is a kind of pantomime theater. The actors do not speak any text, but convey action and emotions solely through body language , gestures and facial expressions . However, pronounced facial expressions are difficult to achieve in black light theater, as neon-colored make-up does not shine particularly intensely or because masks are often used that glow in black light but cover the facial expressions. The black theater represents an extended form of black light theater , in which players dressed in black are “normal”, ie. H. visible, actors appear.

Mobile performances with black theater technology are now known under the term "black light shows". The performances are not tied to a fixed theater, but can be realized at events under certain technical conditions. A short story is visualized in a show lasting between 8 and 15 minutes.

One representative of contemporary black light theater is the Černé Divadlo ("Black Theater") - Hoidekr Interactive Light Theater (HILT) by Theodor Hoidekr in Prague.

In Germany, black light theater is mainly represented by the Velvets Theater, which was founded in Prague in 1967/68 and is now based in Wiesbaden.

Framework

Black light theater is essentially “only two-dimensional”, which means that flat objects and items must always be moved as parallel as possible to the edge of the stage. Players dressed in black are also not allowed to move in front of people or objects appearing, otherwise they will become visible in front of the white or neon-colored background and thereby destroy the desired illusion. A very weak low beam that shines on the audience from the edge of the stage is also important so that the audience cannot perceive too much residual light on the stage and thus no shape outlines, which would be detrimental to the illusion.

Potential as a leisure activity

Since players in black are not visible or are not recognizable as people, black light theater is also ideal as a leisure activity for people who live with disabilities or are shy, but still want to act on stage. In the context of inclusion , for example, the boundaries between disability and non- disability can become blurred if the viewer can no longer distinguish between the two.
