William Scherr

William Harold "Bill" Scherr (born July 27, 1961 in Eureka , South Dakota ) is a former American wrestler and coach.

Career

Bill Scherr is from South Dakota. He began wrestling at Mobridge High School with his twin brother James Scherr . In addition, he was also active in American football , athletics and rodeo riding at a young age . After his first major successes in wrestling, however, he concentrated entirely on this sport. In 1980, he became the American junior middleweight, free style champion. Since 1982 he attended Nebraska State University , where he continued his success in wrestling in higher education. From 1985 he started regularly at the World Wrestling Championships and represented the USA together with his twin brother Jim at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul.

He made his debut at a world championship in 1985 in Budapest. He surprised the international wrestling world because he won the world light heavyweight title. In the final he defeated Roland Dudziak from the GDR.

From 1986 he started a weight class higher, in the heavyweight division. He was again in the final at the World Cup this year in Budapest, but this time lost to the strong Soviet athlete Arslan Hadartzew just on points.

From 1987 Bill started for the Saunksit Kids and won another medal at the World Championships in Clermont-Ferrand . He lost in the semifinals to Leri Chabelowi from the USSR and won the battle for the bronze medal against Julius Strnisko from the CSSR.

In 1988 Bill also won an Olympic medal. In the battle for the bronze medal, he defeated Uwe Neupert from the GDR on points.

In 1989 he started at a world championship for the last time and was runner-up again in Martigny / Switzerland. In the final he was defeated by the Soviet wrestler Akhmed Atawow with 5: 9 points.

In addition to these championships, Bill Scherr also frequently took part in the World Cup tournaments that were taking place in Toledo in the USA at that time and landed great successes there. So he defeated the Soviet Olympic champions Leri Chabelowi and Sanassar Howhannisjan here .

Bill Scherr was an active wrestler coach at Indiana University . He later took over the US women's team as the responsible trainer. In 2005 he, who is now in Glenview / Ill. resident, was named U.S. Coach of the Year after being inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1998.
