Sven Thiele (born May 12, 1969 in Merseburg ) is a German wrestler . He was vice world champion in 1995 and from 1992 to 2008 he was German heavyweight champion 17 times in free style. He has participated in three Olympic Games and won numerous medals in international championships and tournaments.

Career

Sven Thiele started wrestling in 1979 in Merseburg. Since his talent was recognized at an early stage, he was delegated to the children's and youth sports school in Halle . As a member of SC Chemie Halle , Rainer Kamm became his coach in 1982, who led him to the German and soon to the world class of freestyle wrestlers in the heavyweight division until 1987. He won his first German heavyweight championship in 1992, defeating the reigning world champion Andreas Schröder from Jena . After German reunification, he first moved to KSV Witten 07 , but also started for AC Bavaria Goldbach , WKG Halle-Merseburg and the1. Luckenwalder Wrestling Club . He wrestled in the first German Bundesliga for 19 years and was active in the 1st Bundesliga for KFC Leipzig until 2008 .

Sven made his debut on the international wrestling mat at the European Championships in 1993 in Istanbul . He took 4th place there, as he lost in the battle for the bronze medal against the Russian Gennadi Schilzow with a score of 0: 0 by a judge's decision.

At the European Championships in Rome in 1994 , he finished only 9th. A year later, he proved his skills at the World Championships in Atlanta and was runner-up. He achieved shoulder victories over Neal Kranz from Guam , Feng Aigang from China , a point win over Sasa Turmanidze from Georgia and was defeated in the final by US Olympic champion Bruce Baumgartner just 0: 1 on points.

In 1996 he became vice European champion in Budapest . In the final he was defeated by the reigning world champion Mahmut Demir from Turkey .

In the following years he achieved his best results at the European Championships. In 1997, 1999, 2000 and 2001 he won the bronze medal each time and in 2002 and 2004 he reached 4th place each time. At the Olympic Games he never managed to win a medal. Several times he was close to it, but always lost the decisive fights that would have led to the medal ranks. In 1996, 2000 and 2004 he took 6th, 7th and 9th place. At the world championships it was similar to him, he achieved many placements among the 10 best wrestlers in the world, but after 1995 no more medals.

He finally achieved prestige successes in 2001 when he won the military world championship and the 2003 World Cup in Boise. Sven also stood his ground in many other tournaments, won some of these tournaments and was often among the top three winners. After his victory at the German championships in 2008 , he initially ended his career. In May 2010, Thiele announced that he would play again in the Ringer Bundesliga for ASV Hof from the 2010/2011 season .

Sven Thiele is a master electrical engineer, was a senior sergeant major in the Bundeswehr during his active time as a wrestler and was a trainer at the performance center in Leipzig from 2006 to 2012. He graduated as a "Diplom-Trainer des DOSB" and then studied "Sport and Applied Training Science" (BA). He then became national coach in the German Wrestling Association from 2013 to 2016, responsible for the freestyle area. From 2017 he switched to the school service as a teacher and passes on his knowledge as a national trainer in Austria.

His son Erik Thiele successfully followed in his footsteps and won his first medal at an international championship in freestyle wrestling with the bronze medal at the 2016 European Championships in Riga.
