Aleksi "Alex" Modebadze ( Georgian ალექსი მოდებაძე ; born February 21, 1978 in Tbilisi ) is a Georgian wrestler . In 2001 he was vice- European champion in free style in the heavyweight division .

Career

Aleksi Modebadse started wrestling in 1991. He belongs to the Shewardeni Tbilisi sports club and is trained by Sasa Turmanidze . He prefers the free style and wrestles with a height of 1.91 meters in the heavyweight division, the weight class up to 120 kg body weight. He studied law while still active and is now a lawyer.

His international career as a wrestler began in 1995 when he took part in the Junior World Championship (Espoirs age group) in Tehran. He finished 7th in the heavyweight division. In the following years he also took part in several international championships as a junior. The best results he achieved were a 3rd place at the Junior European Championships 1997 in Istanbul in the age group "Juniors", a 2nd place at the Junior European Championships 1998 in Radovis / Macedonia and a 2nd place at the Junior World Championship 1998 in Las Vegas, each in the heaviest weight class.

In 1998, Aleksi Modebadse was used for the first time at a European men's championship. In the heavyweight division he came in a good 5th place. He lost his first fight against Milan Mazáč, Slovakia, then defeated Gábor Gombos, Hungary and Krassimir Kotschew , Bulgaria, but retired after another defeat against Sven Thiele , Germany. In the same year he was also used at the men's world championship in Tehran. He came there to a victory over Georgi Kaisinov, Uzbekistan, then lost to Rasoul Khadem from Iran, defeated Gelegschamtsyn Ösöchbajar , Mongolia and was eliminated after a defeat against Aydın Polatçı , Turkey. He came in 10th place. At the European Championships in Minsk in 1999, he came in 5th place. He lost his first fight there against Aljaksej Mjadswedseu , Belarus, then defeated Zsolt Gombos, Hungary, lost to Sven Thiele and defeated Boschidar Bojadschiew from Bulgaria. At the 1999 World Cup in Ankara, he only came in 18th after losing to Chen Xing Qiang, China and Aydın Polatçı.

In spring 2000 Aleksi Modebadse managed to qualify for the Olympic Games in Sydney. Before these games, however, the European Championship took place in Budapest, where he came in 10th after a victory over Racab Aşabalıyev, Azerbaijan and a defeat against Theofilios Abadzis, Greece. He then took the same place at the Olympic Games in Sydney. However, there he lost both fights that he had to contest, namely against Efstathios Topalidis , Greece and against Abbas Jadidi , Iran.

In 2001 he achieved what was perhaps the greatest success of his wrestling career when he became vice European champion in Budapest. On the way to this success he first lost to David Musuľbes , Russia, then defeated Radosław Jankowski, Poland, Iwan Ishchenko, Ukraine, Theofilos Abadzis and Ottó Aubéli , Hungary and lost again in the final against David Musuľbes. At the World Cup this year he was far less successful, because he lost in Sofia against Alexis Rodríguez Valera , Cuba and Hisham Abdelwahab Abdelmoamen, Egypt and only came in 21st place. In 2003 he won another medal at the European Championships in Riga after victories over Barys Hrynkewitsch, Belarus, Francesco Miano-Petta, Italy and Aydın Polatçı, a defeat against David Musuľbes and another victory over Rareş Daniel Chintojan , Romania, with the bronze medal. At the 2008 World Championships in New York he won over Edgar Alfonso Becerra Yañev, Venezuela and Jagdish Kaliraman, India. But then he lost his third fight against Artur Taymazov from Uzbekistan and finished 8th.

In 2004, Aleksi Modebadse also competed in the Olympic Games in Athens. He came there to a victory over Ottó Aubéli, but then lost to the former world champion Kuramagomed Kuramagomedow from Russia and ended up in 14th place.

Until the end of his career in 2010, he did not compete in international championships as often. In 2007 he won another medal at the European Championships in Sofia. He defeated Rareș Daniel Chintojan, lost to Serhij Prjadun , Ukraine and then secured this medal by winning over Gheorghe Susumcov, Moldova and Ottó Aubéli. Aleksi Modebadse finished his international wrestling career with an excellent fifth place at the 2009 World Cup in Herning / Denmark. He lost his first fight there against Fardin Masoumi Valadi , Iran, then came to victories over Recep Kara , Turkey and Arjan Bhullar , Canada, but lost the final fight for a bronze medal against Tervel Dlagnev from the United States.

The result of the Georgian championship is still known from 2010. Aleksi Modebadse came in second behind Giorgi Sakandelidze and ahead of Giorgi Kwirischwili and Koba Kereselidze.
