Shalva Chikladze

Shalva Tschikladze , Georgian შალვა ჩიხლაძე , (born July 12, 1912 in Kutaisi , † January 14, 1997 in Tbilisi ) was a Soviet wrestler . He won a silver medal at the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki .

Life

Shalva Chikladze grew up in Georgia and started wrestling there as a teenager. As a member of a Soviet security organ, he was a member of the Dinamo Tiflis sports club and developed into one of the best Soviet wrestlers in the Greco-Roman style in the light heavyweight division around 1950.

In 1950 he won the Soviet light heavyweight championship for the first time, having been able to place in the front of these championships several times in previous years. In 1951 he lost this title to August Englas , the Estonian from Tallinn . In 1952 he got this title back and was then nominated for the Olympic Games in Helsinki . There he won the silver medal with victories over Umberto Silvestri from Italy , Max Leichter from Germany and the 1948 Olympic champion Karl-Erik Nilsson from Sweden and defeats to Gyula Kovács from Hungary and Kelpo Grondahl from Finland .

After this great success, he withdrew from international competition and was no longer on the winners' lists at Soviet championships.
