Vyacheslav Mikolajowytsch Olijnyk ( Ukrainian В'ячеслав Миколайович Олійник ; born April 27, 1966 in Mariupol ) is a former Soviet and later Ukrainian wrestler . He was an Olympic champion in 1996 in the Greco-Roman style light heavyweight division.

Career

Vyacheslav Olijnyk began wrestling in 1974 at the age of eight. He joined the Soviet Army and became a member of SKA Kiev , an army sports club. Nikolai Pantazi became his trainer. He already attracted attention as a junior when he was at the 1986 European Championships in Malmö in Greco-Roman. Middleweight style won the title in front of Stig Kleven from Norway and Maik Bullmann from Frankfurt , with whom he would have many exciting duels in the next few years.

At first, however, Maik Bullmann was clearly ahead of the competition on the international wrestling mat among the seniors. From 1989 to 1994, he achieved great success when he became Olympic champion in 1992 and multiple world champion. Apart from a 3rd place at the World Cup in Rome in 1990, Vyacheslav Olijnyk only had to prevail in the Soviet Union and after the collapse of the Soviet Union in the CIS and in the Ukraine against Pavel Potapov , Vladimir Popov and Sjarhej Dzjamjaschkewitsch before he left 1994 came to permanent use in the international championships with the seniors.

In 1994, starting for the Ukraine , he immediately became European light heavyweight champion in Athens ahead of Sjarhej Kiriltschuk from Belarus and Stig Kleven. He also performed very well at the World Championships in Tampere in the same year and was runner-up behind Gogi Koguaschwili from Russia and ahead of Maik Bullmann. Gogi Koguaschwili was next to Maik Bullmann to the main competitor of Olijnyk at the international championships. Olijnyk was never able to defeat Koguashvili.

1995 was not as successful for Olijnyk as 1994. After all, he won a bronze medal at the European Championships in Besançon behind Gogi Koguaschwili and Maik Bullmann. At the World Championships in Prague he was eliminated after the 1st round and only came in 25th place.

The 1996 European Championship in Budapest showed the same result as the 1995 European Championship: Gogi Koguaschwili won ahead of Maik Bullmann and Vyacheslav Olijnyk. But his big day came at the Olympic Games in Atlanta that year . He was in great shape, won his six fights and became an Olympic champion in a superior manner . Among the wrestlers he defeated was Maik Bullmann, whom he defeated with 4: 2 points. Gogi Koguaschwili made it easy for Olijnyk this time, because he lost in the second round to the Hungarian Nándor Gelenesi and had to retire without being able to wrestle against Olijnyk and Bullmann, who won the bronze medal.

After the Olympic Games in 1996, Olijnyk, who had lived from wrestling in the meantime, only achieved an acceptable result at the 1997 World Cup in Wroclaw with the 6th place. In 1998 and 1999 he was unable to qualify for the international championships in Ukraine against Davyd Saldadze . In 2000 he managed to qualify again for the Olympic Games in Sydney in the middleweight division (up to 85 kg body weight). He only made it to the second round and ended up in 14th place.

After that, Vyacheslav Olijnyk was no longer at any international championship.
