Ants Nisu

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ants Nisu (born January 30, 1950 in Kuressaare , Estonia ) is a former Soviet wrestler of Estonian origin.

Career

Ants Nisu started wrestling in Tallinn in 1964. He developed into an excellent wrestler in the Greco-Roman style. His trainer was Alfred Saviste. The strong athlete competed in the light heavyweight class, which at that time reached up to 90 kg body weight. In 1970 he became the Soviet junior champion.

In the seniors he was one of the few Estonian wrestlers to penetrate the top Soviet class. In 1974 he became Soviet runner-up in the light heavyweight division and in 1976 he even managed to become Soviet champion in this weight class. He also won the prestigious "Ivan Poddubny" tournament in Moscow in 1975 and 1976 , the winners of which were generally used by the Soviet Wrestling Federation in major international championships. Unfortunately, it is not known whether the Soviet Olympic champion and multiple world champion Valeri Resanzew , who then dominated the world elite in the light heavyweight division, competed in these championships or tournaments. Ants Nisu won the Estonian championship six times.

In the course of his career, Ants Nisu was only used at one international championship, the 1976 European Championship in Leningrad . He won there over Fred Theobald from the Federal Republic of Germany , Allan Karing from Denmark and Stojan Nikolow from Bulgaria . But he lost to Dieter Heuer from the GDR and to Petre Dicu from Romania . With these results he came in 4th place and narrowly missed a medal.

Ants Nisu does not appear in any other result lists after 1976. He took up the coaching profession and has been a coach in the Estonian Wrestling Federation since Estonia's independence. But he is still active himself and was world champion at the "Masters" in 2004 in Seinäjoki and 2006 in Riga in the age groups 51–55 and 56–60 years. He still lives in Tallinn .
