Jan Dolgowicz (born December 21, 1954 in Skarbiewo near Bydgoszcz ) is a former German wrestler of Polish origin.

Career

Jan Dolgowicz grew up in Katowice and started wrestling there at GKS Kattowitz. The Upper Silesian attended a technical center in Katowice and became a mechanic. Jan's coach in Katowice was Jan Adamaszek. After being accepted into the national team, he was also looked after by national coach Janusz Tracewski. Jan weighed approx. 82 kg with a height of 1.78 m and was middleweight. He preferred the Greco-Roman style. In 1977 he won the Polish middleweight championship for the first time in this style. In the same year he also made his debut at an international championship. In Bursa , Turkey , he lost his first two fights and was eliminated after two rounds. Things went much better for him at the 1977 World Championships in Gothenburg . He won four fights and defeated the eventual world champion Vladimir Tscheboksarow from the Soviet Union , but retired after defeats against Momir Petkovic from Yugoslavia and Ion Draica from Romania , who would develop into a real fear opponent for him in the further career of Jan took 4th place.

In 1978 Jan became vice European champion in Oslo . Again he lost to Ion Draica, but only in the final battle. At the 1978 World Championships he just missed a medal. This time he was defeated by Valery Cheboksarov and again by his feared opponent Ion Draica.

1979 Jan Dolgowicz was again vice European champion, but Ion Draica again denied him the title. He did not do quite as well at the World Championships in San Diego that year. After two wins, Ion Draica and Momit Petkovic were the final destination for Jan. So he came in 6th place.

In 1980 Jan only started at the Moscow Olympics . By winning the silver medal, he achieved the greatest success of his career. In the first fight of the tournament he had to face Ion Draica of all people. This time he resisted this to such an extent that both wrestlers, Jan and Ion, were taken off the mat for passivity. For Ion Draica it was the end of the line after another fight, while Jan fought his way into the final and only lost in the fight for the gold medal against the world champion of the previous year Gennadi Korban from the USSR.

Jan also failed to win the title in 1981. At the European Championships this year in Gothenburg he lost again in the final to Gennadi Korban and at the World Championships this year Draica and Korban and ended up on 5th place.

In 1982 Jan played his last international championship. It was the World Cup in his hometown of Katowice . Here, too, he was not able to win the title, but he was able to finish his international career with a bronze medal.

In 1983 Jan Dolgowicz moved to the Federal Republic of Germany . He got the German citizenship and competed in the Bundesliga team of KSV Aalen for a few years . In 1985 he also won the German Middleweight Championship, Greco-Roman. Style. After finishing his career as an active wrestler, he worked for many years as a trainer for top German clubs ( KSV Germania Aalen , ASV Bauknecht Schorndorf ).
