Teimuras Apchasawa
Teimuras Apchasawa ( Georgian თეიმურაზ აფხაზავა ; born April 21, 1955 in Kutaisi ) is a Georgian wrestler . Apchasawa, who is a teacher by profession, was world champion in 1982 and 1983, and European champion in 1984.
Life
Apchasawa grew up in Kutaisi . At the age of eleven he started wrestling there at a wrestling school. In 1974 he became Soviet junior middleweight champion in the Greco-Roman style. He made his international debut at the Junior European Championships that year in Haparanda, Sweden . There he became vice European champion. A year later he even became junior world champion in Chaskowo . Because of the tough competition in the Soviet Union, it was not until 1979 before it was used for the first time in an international championship among the seniors. At the European Championships in Bucharest he first came to four wins, but then lost to the more experienced Jan Dolgowicz from Poland and Ion Draica from Romania and took 3rd place.
In the next few years he did not come to international assignments because he was ousted in the USSR by the late starter Gennadi Korban . Well prepared, he only appeared again at the 1982 World Championships in Katowice . Winning the world champion title was the reward for that. In the final this time he defeated the strong Ion Draica.
In 1983 he defended his world title in Kiev . Andrzej Malina from Poland, Ion Draica and the Swedish newcomer Leonard Lundell gave him tough fights, but could not prevent Apchasawa from winning.
In 1984 he became European champion for the first time in Jönköping, Sweden . It was his third success in an international championship. After these convincing performances, Apchasawa was also considered a favorite at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles . It was bitter for him that he could not start there because of the Olympic boycott of the socialist states.
In 1985 he was not used in any international championships. At the European Championships in Athens in 1986 he was there again, lost to Tibor Komáromi from Hungary , but won the battle for the bronze medal against Angel Bonchev from Bulgaria .
Apchasawa has been a teacher in Kutaisi since the end of his wrestling career.
The results of the international championships and some other tournaments in which he participated can be found in the following section.
