history

After the Cheyenne - Arapaho reservation was opened to non - Indian settlers in 1892, the settlement was founded and named after the early settler Amos Leedey. Leedy was the first postal worker after opening the first post office in 1900. The settlement's growth essentially began after the opening of the Wichita Falls and Northwestern Railway (later Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad ), which linked Elk City and Leedey in 1911. In the same year the church was officially founded. Leedey's history has since been shaped by agriculture and the oil and natural gas extraction that began in the area since 1923.

Like other communities in Oklahoma, Leedy has been repeatedly hit by tornadoes . Even today, the citizens of Leedy commemorate the victims of the tornado of May 31, 1947, which killed six and injured 15 and destroyed 20 shops and 147 homes.
