Andrzej Supron (born October 22, 1952 in Warsaw ) is a former Polish wrestler .

Career

Andrzej Supron grew up in Warsaw and began in 1963 at the sports club RKS "Elektrycznosz" Warsaw with the rings . In 1972 he began studying mining technology in Katowice and switched to GKS Katowice. During his career he was looked after by the coaches Tadeusz Świętulski, Jan Adamaszek, Antoni Masternak and Janusz Tracewski. Andrzej started as a lightweight and later grew into welterweight. He wrestled exclusively in Greco-Roman. Style.

He made his international debut at the European Youth Championships in Huskvarna, Sweden . There he won the European Championship in the class up to 65 kg body weight. As early as 1971 he started for the first time with the seniors at the World Championships in Sofia . He showed excellent fights for his age of 19 years and took 6th place in the lightweight.

At the 1972 European Championships in Katowice , he won his first senior medal. He also beat the later European champion Jürgen Hähnel from Leipzig , but lost to the Hungarian Antal Speer and came in 3rd place. At the Olympic Games in Munich he started in the lightweight and lost in the 4th round to the later Olympic champion Schamil Chisamutdinow . So he came in 8th place.

After Andrzej was relatively unsuccessful in 1973, he won four medals in a row at the 1974 European Championships, 1974 World Championships, 1975 European Championships and 1975 World Championships, including the gold medal at the 1975 European Championship in Ludwigshafen am Rhein . So Andrzej started with high hopes at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal , but was again unable to win a medal. Suren Nalbandjan from the USSR and Ștefan Rusu from Romania , with whom he was to fight many tough battles over the next few years, prevented him from doing so. A 5th place remained for Andrzej.

Also in the period between the 1976 and 1980 Olympic Games, Andrzej won several medals at international championships. In 1979 he became world champion for the first time. On the way there he also beat Stefan Rusu, to whom he had previously lost four times, on points. After he had only finished 10th at the 1980 European Championships after another defeat against Rusu, he went to the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow with mixed feelings . There he delivered an excellent tournament and won the silver medal. In the final battle, he was once again defeated by Stefan Rusu, albeit only very slightly on points. Before he had u. a. the strong Lars-Erik Skiöld from Sweden and Suren Nalbandjan were beaten.

In the following years Andrzej continued to be very successful. He changed the weight class and started now in welterweight. He had the greatest success in 1982 when he became European champion in Varna . In 1982 and 1983 he was runner-up in the world championship. In the welterweight class he met an “old” rival with Stefan Rusu and extremely strong “new” opponents with Ferenc Kocsis from Hungary , Roger Tallroth from Sweden and Michail Mamiaschwili from the USSR . His successes in 1982 and 1983 proved that he could assert himself against them.

Andrzej was denied participation in his fourth Olympic Games in 1984 in Los Angeles because of the boycott of these games by the socialist countries. Andrzej completed his career in 1985 at the World Championships in Kolbotn / Norway . There he was no longer able to win a medal. In the battle for the bronze medal, he was defeated by the 1984 Olympic champion Jouko Salimäki from Finland just on points.

Andrzej Supron was a very popular wrestler in all wrestling circles, as he always wrestled very fair and decent. He was always in a good mood and had a good word for all opponents. In addition, he looked brilliant and therefore had a large following among the female audience. He completed a coaching education from 1979 and worked after the end of his career as an active wrestler as a coach, including several years in the United States. Now Andrzej is a fitness entrepreneur in Warsaw.
