Jouko Salomäki

Jouko Johannes Salomäki (born August 26, 1962 in Kauhajoki / Western Finland) is a former Finnish wrestler and 1984 Olympic champion in Greco-Roman. Welterweight style.

Career

Jouko Salomäki grew up in his hometown of Kauhajoki , and began as a student in 1970 when Ringer Club Kauhajoen Karhu with the rings . He came from a family of wrestlers, and his brother Jari was a multiple Finnish champion in Greco-Roman. Middleweight style. Jouko Salomäki quickly developed into an excellent wrestler in Greco-Roman. Style and was Finnish champion in 1977 at the age of 15 in front of such famous wrestlers as Reijo Haaparanta and Taisto Halonen . In 1980 he moved to the Nurmon Jymy wrestling club . In the following years he was always represented in the top field at the Finnish championships. In 1979 he became Finnish junior champion in the class up to 65 kg body weight and from 1981 to 1989 he won the Finnish welterweight championship seven times in the seniors, into which he had since grown. Timo Niemi only interrupted this series in 1988 and relegated Jouko Salomäki to 2nd place.

Jouko Salomäki, who was able to devote himself fully to wrestling as a police officer, was also very successful on the international wrestling mat. In 1982 he became junior European welterweight champion in the category "Espoirs" in Leipzig , that was the juniors up to the age of 20. After a 5th place at the European Championships in Jönköping in 1984 , he took advantage of the hour at the Olympic Games of the same year in Los Angeles and became Olympic welterweight champion. He defeated u. a. also the multiple world champion and huge favorite Ștefan Rusu from Romania and the very strong Swede Roger Tallroth .

In the next few years he confirmed this success with excellent places at the World and European Championships. He took 3rd place at the 1985 World Championships in Kolbotn / Norway and at the 1986 European Championships in Athens and was runner-up in 1987 in Tampere, his home country . In those years he mostly failed because of the outstanding Soviet wrestler Mikhail Mamiashvili , against whom he could not win. When this was missing from the 1987 World Cup in Clermont-Ferrand because he had switched to the middleweight division, Jouko Salomäki achieved another great triumph, as he became world champion with five wins . He won u. a. about the Soviet athlete Daulet Turlychanow and Mirko Jahn from the GDR .

Then Jouko Salomäki resigned from international wrestling, so that he was no longer at the Olympic Games in 1988 at the start. However, when the European Championships took place in Oulu in 1989 , he tried a comeback, but only came in 6th place in the welterweight division.

As a veteran, Jouko Salomäki made a name for himself when he took 3rd place in his age group at the World Championships in 2001 in the class up to 76 kg and in 2003 even the world championship in the class up to 85 in his age group kg body weight gained.
