Manuchar K Wirkwelia ( Georgian მანუჩარ კვირკველია ; born October 12, 1978 in Osurgeti ) is a Georgian wrestler . He was Olympic champion in Beijing in 2008 in the Greco-Roman welterweight style.

Life

Manuchar K Wirkwelia started wrestling as a teenager in his hometown of Osurgeti, Guria region . After initial successes at national level, he moved to Dinamo Tbilisi and developed into an excellent wrestler in the Greco-Roman style. As a student he made his living wrestling. For this reason, in addition to his commitment in Tbilisi, he also starts for Konya Seker Spor in the Turkish wrestling league. After his active career as a wrestler, he became a businessman. In 2014 he was elected President of the Georgian Wrestling Federation as the successor to Luka Kurtanidze .

He made his debut on the international wrestling mat at the age of 24. when he competed in the lightweight at the European Championships in Seinäjoki / Finland . There he took second place with victories over Fedor Gaivan from Moldova , Juha Lappalainen, Finland, Ismail Baygus , Germany and Vitali Schuk from Belarus and a defeat in the final against Şeref Eroğlu from Turkey . He also won a medal in 3rd place at the World Championships in Moscow that same year. There he defeated Vitali Schuk, Konstantinos Arkouedas from Greece and Nikolai Gergow from Bulgaria . In the semifinals he was defeated against Fərid Mansurov from Azerbaijan and in the fight for 3rd place he defeated Maxim Semjonow from Russia .

At the 2003 European Championships in Belgrade , Manuchar K Wirkwelia defeated Waldemars Venckaitis from Lithuania , Eduard Kratz from Germany and Hovhannes Kurghinjan, an Armenian starting for the Netherlands, on points and then lost again to Şeref Eroğlu on points and came in 5th place. He presented himself in fantastic shape at the 2003 World Cup in Créteil . Mainly with his special grip, the wrong lifter in the floor position, against which almost no opposing wrestler has a defense, he defeated six competitors and became world champion in a superior style. After two easy victories over Ainsley Robinson from Canada and Jaros Ondrej from the Czech Republic , he defeated the 1996 Olympic champion Ryszard Wolny from Poland in his third fight and his feared opponent Şeref Eroğlu, who was 1997 world featherweight champion, in his fourth fight . With further victories over Levente Füredy from Hungary and Armen Wardanjan , the Armenian starting for the Ukraine , he ended his triumph.

In 2004 Manuchar K Wirkwelia was absent from the European Championships, but was at the start of the Olympic Games in Athens . Participation in these games is a dark point in the career of Manuchar K Wirkwelia. Because after a high 1:11 point defeat against Şeref Eroğlu he was interned. Wrestling association FILA disqualified for unsporting behavior and completely removed from the rating.

From 2005 he started in welterweight, so one weight class higher. In this new weight class, he initially had some adjustment difficulties. At this year's European Championships in Varna he came in 7th after victories over Wladislaus Lukasevic from Lithuania and Wolodymyr Schazkych from Ukraine and a defeat against Adam Juretzko from Germany. At the 2005 World Cup in Budapest he won only his first fight against Alexander Kirkjinow from Belarus and was eliminated in the second fight with a defeat against Mahmut Altay from Turkey. He only finished 10th.

In 2006 Manuchar K Wirkwelia won the bronze medal both at the European championships in Moscow and at the world championships in Guangzhou / China . In Moscow he defeated Mkhitar Hunanjan from Armenia , Joachim Ardalen from Norway a . Juha Lappalainen from Finland, then lost to Olympic champion Warteres Samurgaschew from Russia and defeated Mohammad Reza Babulfath from Sweden in the fight for 3rd place . In Guangzhou he won over Krzysztof Kowalski from Poland and Ahmed Mohamed Abdelsadek from Egypt , he lost to former world champion Marko Yli-Hannuksela from Finland in the semifinals and he secured 3rd place with a victory over Thomas Curtis Dantzler from the United States .

In 2007 Manuchar Kwirterweight won the second title at an international championship with his victory at the European Championships in Sofia . On the way he defeated Andrejs Afanasjevs from Latvia , Dimitri Pyschkow from Ukraine, Valdemars Venckaitis from Lithuania, Arsen Dschulfalakjan from Armenia and the Swiss Reto Bucher, who surprisingly made it into the final . At this year's World Championships in Baku he first won over the Chinese Chang Yongxiang , but lost in his next fight against Konstantin Schneider from Germany (1: 3 rounds and 7: 9 technical points). Since Schneider did not reach the final, he was eliminated and took 20th place in the final bill.

In 2008, Manuchar Kwikwelia first had to qualify for participation in the Olympic Games in Beijing . He achieved this with a convincing tournament victory in Ostia . He won there ahead of Ilgar Abdulow from Azerbaijan and the Russian Olympic champion Warteres Samurgaschew, who is now starting for Bulgaria.

In Beijing , Manuchar Kffektwelia won four Olympic gold medals. He dominated his four opponents sovereign and only gave up one round in his fight against the Hungarian Péter Bácsi . He defeated his opponents in the following order: Christophe Guénot from France, Konstantin Schneider, Péter Bácsi and Chang Yongxiang.

After this great success he struggled and competed in several international championships. But he was far from achieving these successes. At the 2009 World Championships in Herning he came in 21st place, at the 2010 World Championships in Moscow on 14th place, at the 2011 European Championships in Dortmund on 17th place and at the 2011 World Championships in Istanbul on 15th place. In 2012 he ended his wrestling career.
