Alan Lavrentjewitsch Chugajew, not to be confused with Alan Anatoljewitsch Chugajew , the 2012 Olympic champion in the Greco-Roman style in the middleweight division, comes from North Ossetion-Alania. He started wrestling as a teenager in 1999, specializing in free style. He is a student and belongs to a sports club in Vladikavkaz. The 1.92 meter tall athlete is wrestling in the heaviest weight class of freestyle wrestling, which had its limit of 120 kg until December 31, 2013 and has been 125 kg since January 1, 2014. He was or is mainly trained by Ch.W. Apajew, Cesar Tibilow and Gia Berishvili.

Alan Khugayev made his debut on the international wrestling mat at the 2008 European Junior Championships in Kosice. He came there in the heavyweight division on the 7th place. At the 2009 European Junior Championships in Tbilisi, he performed significantly better, because he won the title there ahead of Giorgi Sakandelidse from Georgia and Nick Matuhin from Germany. At the Junior World Championships in Budapest in 2010 it was only enough for him to finish 7th. Muradin Kuschchow from Ukraine won ahead of Taha Akgül from Turkey.

In the following years he did not succeed in getting to the top of his weight class in Russia. However, in the years 2011 to 2013 he achieved some good events in strong international tournaments. In 2013 he became Russian heavyweight champion for the first time and in January 2014 he also won the prestigious "Ivan Yarigin" Grand Prix in Krasnoyarsk ahead of Ansor Khirsiyev, Russia, Muradin Kuschchow and Aslanbek Aliyev, Russia. He was then used at the 2014 European Championships in Vantaa / Finland, where he won over Rares Daniel Chintojan, Romania, Dániel Ligeti , Hungary and Dawit Modsmanashvili , Georgia and faced Taha Akgül in the final, against whom he had no chance and after just 1.18 minutes had to paint the sails.
