Life
Since his parent club KSV Witten 07 withdrew from the wrestling Bundesliga in 2009, Englich fought for the 1st Luckenwalder Sportclub in the 1st Bundesliga. In 2013 he returned to Witten. At individual championships he was active for RSV Hansa 90 Frankfurt (Oder) from 2010 to 2012. From 2007 to 2009 he completed an apprenticeship as a fire fighter at the state fire brigade school in Eisenhüttenstadt / Brandenburg. This special training allowed a career in high-performance sport. He has been with the Dortmund professional fire department since 2013.
Englich was discovered for wrestling in 1985 as part of the state program "Talent Scouting and Promotion NRW" in Witten. His father Detlef Englich was a top German wrestler himself and his sister Nina Englich was one of the world's top women wrestlers for many years. At his first German youth championship in 1991 he won the silver medal, then from 1992 to 1998 the championship titles of the C, B and A youth and junior weight classes (38 to 90 kg).
He won his first men's title in 1998 at the German Championship in Witten (90 kg), and then more in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2010 and 2012 (96 kg).
His international career began in 1993 when he finished 6th in the “Cadetten World Championships” (weight class 51 kg). The greatest successes are the two Vice European Championships in the 96 kg class (Greco-Roman style) in Belgrade in 2003 and in Tampere (Finland) in 2008 , the European Junior Championships in 1998 (90 kg, gold medal in Tirana ) and the title at the 2003 World Military Championship in Istanbul . At the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing , Englich won the silver medal in the Greco-Roman style up to 96 kg. For this success he received the silver laurel leaf from Federal President Köhler .
Further successful international stations were the Olympic Games in Athens 2004 (11th place), the World Championships 2002 (8th), 2003 (10th), 2005 (5th) and 2010 (11th), the European Men's Championships 2001 (9th) .) and 2010 (5th) as well as the Grand Prix of Germany 2005 (3rd), 2007 and 2010 (both 2nd). One of the outstanding events is the 2008 Olympic qualification tournament in Novi Sad (Serbia), where his success in the last encounter secured him 3rd place and thus the last starting place for the Olympic Games in Beijing.
He made his debut in the Wrestling League in November 1992 when he lost 3: 9 in the 48 kg class against Schifferstadt's Stefan Gartmann at the age of 14. This season, further matches in the 48 and 52 kg class followed, including against Freddy and Markus Scherer, Frank Heinzelbecker, Rosario Schmitt and André Zoschke. After two years in the league team of KSV Witten 07, he moved to AC Köln-Mülheim, where he was active in the 2nd Bundesliga for two years. This was followed by a year in the first division at KSK Konkordia Neuss, before he returned to KSV Witten in 1999, for which he fought in the first division until 2009. After the club withdrew from the Bundesliga, Englich switched to Luckenwalder SC . In 2013 he returned to Witten. At his last German championship in 2014, Englich won the bronze medal in his hometown. In summer 2015 he was coach of the second division team at KSV Witten and led it to the championship in the 2. Bundesliga West; while he was still active in the team. In 2018 he gave up the position for personal reasons and became a regional coach at the North Rhine-Westphalian Wrestling Association.
In 2008 Mirko Englich was honored with the Hermann Weingärtner Prize of the City of Frankfurt (Oder) . That year he was also voted Germany's wrestler of the year .
Mirko Englich was trained by the trainers Frank Bartel, Andreas Ehnert, Bodo Lukowski, Günter Reichelt, Jörn Levermann and Maik Bullmann. He was married to the wrestler Yvonne Englich (1979-2018) and has two children.
