Nikolai Alexejewitsch Monow ( Russian: Николай Алексеевич Монов ; born January 17, 1972 ) is a wrestler who competed for Russia and for the Republic of Moldova . In 1997 he became European champion and vice-world champion in the Greco-Roman style in featherweight .

Career

Nikolai Monow started wrestling as a teenager in 1985. As a young man he joined the Red Army, was stationed in Rostov-on-Don and became a member of the local army sports club. He was trained mainly by Sergei Bulatow. He only wrestled in the Greco-Roman style and always started in featherweight at a height of 1.70 meters. In the junior age he could not excel. His international career only began at the age of 24 when he was used at the 1996 World Cup in Colorado Springs, where he finished well behind Kevin Bracken from the United States, but ahead of Juan Luis Maren Delis from Kube .

In 1997, the situation changed for Nikolai Monow abruptly with the early death of multiple world champion Sergei Martynow . He was suddenly the No. 1 featherweight in the Russian national team and was used in May 1997 at the European Championships in Kouvola / Finland. There he immediately won the title with victories over Ari Pekka Härkänen, Finland, Leonhard Ionel Frincu, Romania, Jerzy Szeibinger, Poland, Matyas Megyes, Hungary and Şeref Eroğlu , Turkey. He was also able to convince at the 1997 World Cup in Wrocław. There he defeated Mchitar Manukjan , Kazakhstan, Mikael Lindgren, Finland and Juan Luis Maren Delis and then faced Şeref Eroğlu again in the final. Şeref Eroğlu was able to reverse the result of the European Championship and win after points (3-0). Nikolai Monow was thus vice world champion.

In 1998 Nikolai Monow won the European Featherweight Championships in Minsk over Akaki Chochua, Georgia, Mikael Lindgren and Jerzy Szeibinger, but lost again in the final against Seref Eroglu. At the world championship of that year in Gaevle / Sweden he won over Yi Shanjan, China and Leonhard Ionel Frincu, then he lost to Choi Sang-sun , South Korea, then defeated the 1996 Olympic champion Włodzimierz Zawadzki from Poland, Akaki Chochua and Peter Ronai from Hungary. According to the complicated regulations that were valid at the time, he had to compete again for a bronze medal against Choi Sang-sun, to whom he was defeated again shortly after the referee's decision with a tie of 2: 2 and thus had to be satisfied with the ungrateful 4th place .

In 1999 he was only used at the World Cup in Athens. There he won over Dovletberdy Mamedow, Turkmenistan, Peter Ronai and Zakaria Al-Nashi, Syria. Then he lost to Şeref Eroğlu and this defeat meant that he was eliminated and only finished 11th.

In 2000, Nikolai Monow won the Olympic qualification tournaments in Faenza and Tashkent and thus made a significant contribution to Russia getting a place in its weight class at the Olympic Games in Sydney. In the following internal Russian elimination for the Olympic team, he was defeated by Warteres Samurgaschew , who was therefore sent to the start in Sydney and was also Olympic champion there.

In 2001 Nikolai Monow took 3rd place behind Şeref Eroğlu and Kevin Bracken at the Featherweight World Cup in Levallois. After that, he did not come to other missions for Russia at international championships.

In 2004 he tried to qualify for the Olympic Games in Athens, starting for the Republic of Moldova. He did not succeed in this at the qualifying tournaments in Novi Sad and Tashkent.
