Ellis Coleman (* 16th August 1991 in Chicago , Illinois ) is an American wrestler in Greco-Roman style in the featherweight . He won the United States Olympics in 2012, qualifying for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. It is also called the Flying Squirrel because of a wrestling grip that made it famous .

Life

Ellis was raised by his mother, Yolanda Barral. He grew up with his older brother, Lillashawn Coleman, and his sister, first in Humboldt Park, then later in the West Side and finally in Oak Park , all of Chicago's boroughs . His biological father, Lewellis Coleman, had drug problems among other things and spent Ellis' entire life in prison. His stepfather, Mose Oliver, who encouraged Ellis to wrestle , was later convicted of gang membership.

Coleman's mother tried to keep all gang influences from Chicago's problematic neighborhoods away from her children. Nonetheless, Ellis' childhood was marked by exchanges of fire in front of his elementary school, gang fights and an apartment fire that destroyed all of the family's belongings.

In 2007 Ellis almost kicked out of school. It wasn't until Mike Powell, his former high school coach, who was a kind of father substitute for Coleman and is still a close friend, that put him on the right track.

In 2009, Ellis graduated from Oak Park-River Forest High School and then began studying at Northern Michigan University .

Career

In his senior year of 2009, Coleman finished his season in the Illinois High School Association Class 3A third with a record of 49 wins to one loss. After losing to Maximilian Schneider of Lane Technical College Prep High School, Ellis needed emergency medical attention as his heart rate hit 225 beats per minute.

In 2011 he won the bronze medal in the Greco-Roman style in the lightweight at the Junior Wrestling World Championship in Bucharest . During the fight against the Iranian Mehdi Zidvand, Ellis used a grip he called the "Flying Squirrel", which he developed together with his brother during training. Coleman became famous through a video of this fight published on Youtube and landed 3rd with his trick in the " ESPN 2011 Best of the Best Highlights".

In 2012, Coleman defeated Joe Betterman in the US Olympic finals, qualifying as the youngest member of the US wrestling team for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

Ellis Coleman lost in the first round of the Olympic Games in London against Bulgarian Ivo Angelov 0: 1, 1: 7.
