Roman Amojan
Roman Amojan ( Armenian Ռոման Ամոյան ; born September 3, 1983 in Yerevan ) is an Armenian wrestler of Yazidi descent. He won a bronze medal at the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008 and was European bantamweight champion in 2006 in the Greco-Roman style.
Career
Roman Amojan started wrestling in 1995. He focused on the Greco-Roman style, in which handles are only allowed from waist height upwards. After his great talent was recognized, he became a member of "Dynamo" Yerevan , the leading club in the Armenian Wrestling Federation. The most important coaches in his career were or are Arutjun Khachaturyan and Gamlet Ovanessjan. With a height of 1.58 meters, he always competed in the bantamweight, the lightest weight class. He currently has no other profession than wrestling.
His sporting success on an international level began in 1999, when, at the age of sixteen, he took 7th place at the Junior World Championships (Cadets) in Nykøbing / Denmark in the weight class up to 42 kg body weight (KG). Two years later he was the winner of the Junior World Championships (Juniors) in Tashkent in the weight class up to 50 kg in front of Ilya Sagalajew, Russia and Aydin Sarsekajew from Kazakhstan .
In 2002 Roman Amojan was also Junior European Champion in Subotica in the weight class up to 50 kg before Malchaz Solomonidse from Georgia and Kristijan Fris from Serbia and Montenegro . At the Junior World Championships in 2003 in Istanbul he lost his first fight against the strong Cuban Jagnier Hernandez and therefore had to retire despite a victory in his second fight against the Swede Andreas Blomquist, the FILA competition rules that were valid at that time were so strange and only proved that 12th place.
In 2003, Roman Amojan started at the Senior World Championships in Créteil, France . In bantamweight he first won over Ässet Imanbajew from Kazakhstan and was defeated in his second fight against Poland Dariusz Jabłoński , who eventually became world champion . For Amojan only the 25th place remained after this defeat.
In 2004 he missed the Olympic qualification and was therefore unable to start in Athens . The first big success in the senior sector came in 2005, because that year he became vice- European bantamweight champion in Varna . After four victorious fights he was defeated by the Russian Viktor Korabljow in the final . At the World Championships this year in Budapest he was not so successful, because he lost there in his first fight completely surprisingly against Elgin Elwais from Palau and finally ended up in 9th place.
In 2006 he had the greatest success of his career when he became European bantamweight champion in Moscow . In the decisive battles he defeated Wugar Ragimow from Ukraine and Wenelin Wenkow from Bulgaria . At the 2006 World Cup in Guangzhou (Canton), however, he again failed to place himself in the front of the field. After a victory over the Vietnamese Nguyern Phan Phong, he lost there in his second fight against Park Eun-chul from South Korea and had to retire. That left him only in 12th place.
In 2007 Roman Amojan only started at the World Championships in Baku . There he fared even worse than in 2006 in Guangzhou, because he lost his first fight against Rövşən Bayramov from Azerbaijan and had to be eliminated due to the rules changed once again because Bayramov did not reach the final. Amojan was 24.
In 2008 he qualified with a 3rd place at the Olympic qualification tournament in Ostia near Rome for participation in the Olympic Games in Beijing this year . In these games he won the bantamweight division with victories over Ässet Imanbajew u. Lascha Gogitadze, Georgia, a loss to Rowshan Bayramov and a victory over Jagnier Hernandes the bronze medal .
At the European Championships in Vilnius in 2009 Roman Amojan won over Wugar Ragimow and Grigoris Anastasiadis from Greece , but then lost in the quarter-finals to Bekchan Mankijew from Russia and thus missed the consolation and ended up in 7th place.
In 2012, Roman Amojan failed to qualify for the London Olympics in the tournaments in Sofia and Helsinki.
