Princess Anna of Hesse and by the Rhine, Grand Duchess of Mecklenburg-Schwerin

Maria Anna Wilhelmine Elisabeth Mathilde of Hesse and the Rhine (* May 25, 1843 in Darmstadt , † April 16, 1865 in Schwerin ) was a princess of Hesse and the Rhine and by marriage Grand Duchess of Mecklenburg-Schwerin .

Life

Anna was the only daughter of Prince Karl of Hesse and the Rhine (1809–1877) from his marriage to Elisabeth (1815–1885), daughter of Prince Wilhelm of Prussia . She was a sister of the Grand Duke Ludwig IV of Hesse and the Rhine .

Anna married Grand Duke Friedrich Franz II of Mecklenburg-Schwerin on May 12, 1864 in Darmstadt . It was the Grand Duke's second marriage after his first wife Auguste died of tuberculosis in 1862. The Grand Duke had met the princess while attending the Frankfurt Prince's Day and felt reminded of his first wife by her pious and shy demeanor. Through this marriage Anna became the stepmother of the four surviving children from Friedrich Franz II's first marriage.

Anna died a year after the marriage at the age of 21 of puerperal fever after the birth of her only child. The Grand Duchess is buried in the Schwerin Cathedral .

Note: What is striking about this family tree is the fact that there were many inter-family marriages among her grandparents and great-grandparents. That is why the Hessen-Darmstadt company is represented there disproportionately often.
