Alberto Enríquez Gallo
Alberto Enríquez Gallo (born July 24, 1895 at the Hacienda Santa Rosa Grande , Tanicuchí , Latacunga ; † July 13, 1962 in Quito ) was an Ecuadorian military man and dictator of his country from October 23, 1937 to August 10, 1938.
He was involved in the suppression of the alfarist uprisings in 1910 and 1911 and in the revolution of 1925. After the fall of Velasco Ibarra in 1935, he was promoted to general by the interim President Federico Páez , who was also his godfather, and sworn in as defense minister. However, when Páez tried to manipulate the 1937 Constituent Assembly, Enríquez Gallo overthrew him and declared himself dictator. In 1938 he called a new constituent assembly and gave it power.
He then largely withdrew from politics, but was an unsuccessful presidential candidate for the Ecuadorian Socialist Party in 1948 and Senator for Cotopaxi from 1956 to 1960 .
