President José María Urbina

José María Mariano Segundo de Urvina y Viteri (born March 19, 1808 in Quillán de Píllaro , † September 4, 1891 in Guayaquil ) was the sixth President (1852-1856) of Ecuador .

He was born in Quillán de Píllaro not far from Tungurahua . One of his training courses took place at the Naval School in Guayaquil . He later became governor of Guayaquil and died there. He showed remarkable courage in a naval battle in 1828 between a Peruvian corvette and two ships from Greater Colombia . Before becoming president of the country, he was a congressman for Guayas Province . One of his first activities as president was the abolition of slavery and the expulsion of the Jesuits from the country in 1852.
