José Fernández-Villaverde

José Fernández-Villaverde y Roca de Togores (born April 4, 1902 in Madrid , † June 16, 1988 ibid) was a Spanish diplomat.

Life

His parents were Ángela Roca de Togores and Raimundo Fernández Villaverde . He married in Madrid on December 26, 1942 Casilda Fernández-Villaverde y Silva, 3rd Condesa de Carvajal (born April 3, 1914 London, † January 5, 2008). Her children are: Álvaro (6th Duque de San Carlos, 4th Marqués de Pozo Rubio), Casilda (3rd Condesa de Carvajal, born February 7, 1945 in Madrid), José Carlos (born February 9, 1947 in Madrid) and Rafael Fernández-Villaverde y Silva, (born January 23, 1949 in Madrid).

He attended the University of Madrid and New College, Oxford . He entered the diplomatic service in 1921.

In 1936 he was second-class embassy secretary in London and was recalled by the Republican government in Madrid on August 15, 1936.

Palacio de Don Álvaro de Bazán

Under Francisco Franco he was Consejero Permanente de Estado . In March 1948 he became Franco's ambassador to Friedrich IX. in Copenhagen.

From 1949 he rented the Palacio de Don Álvaro de Bazán for one peseta a year and was responsible for the maintenance of the building, which also houses the archives of the Navy.

In 1949 he was promoted to agent second class and attended a meeting of the United Nations in New York. From February 1950 to February 1953 he represented Franco as an administrative adviser to the Tribunal Permanente de Arbitraje and was vice-chairman of the Instituto de Estudios Hispánicos in Utrecht.

In 1951 he was promoted to First Class Agent. In February 1953 he was appointed Franco's ambassador to Muhammad Nagib in Cairo. In January 1955 he became State Secretary in the Foreign Ministry. He was Ambassador to the Court of St James’s from 1958 to 1972 .

Among his orders was the Isabel la Católica , Mérito Civil y Carlos III order.

He was buried in Santander.
