Binali Yıldırım [ binaːˌli jɯldɯˈɾɯm ] (born December 20, 1955 in Refahiye , Erzincan Province ) is a Turkish politician . He was the last Prime Minister of the Republic of Turkey until July 9, 2018 . He is a founding member and was chairman of the ruling Justice and Recovery Party (AKP) from May 2016 to May 2017 . Yıldırım is considered a loyal follower of President Erdoğan .

Life

His name Binali was given to him by an Alevi neighbor of his family; it means "son of Ali " in Arabic . Yıldırım is married and has three children. In addition to his native Turkish, he also speaks English and French.

Yıldırım graduated to a naval architect at the Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering of the Technical University of Istanbul . Yıldırım received his specialist training at the World Maritime University in Malmö . At the same university he was an assistant and research fellow. Yıldırım worked at the Camialtı Shipyard and held various management positions in the General Directorate of Shipbuilding Industry. He was General Director of Istanbul Sea Buses (İstanbul Deniz Otobüsleri, İDO) . He was elected to the governing body of the World Maritime University.

In November 2017 it became known that the sons Ahmet and Erkan Yıldırım were involved in the Paradise Papers .

Member of Parliament

Yıldırım was in the 22nd legislative period from October 14, 2002 to July 22, 2007 MP of the AKP for constituency 1 of the Istanbul province of the Grand National Assembly . In the 2007 parliamentary elections , he moved to the National Assembly as a member of the Erzincan Province . In 2011 , 2015 and 2018 he entered parliament as a member of the Izmir Province .

On July 12, 2018, he was elected President of the Parliament of the 27th National Assembly of Turkey . He resigned from the post in February 2019 in order to run for the mayoral election in Istanbul in March 2019.

Minister of transport

Yıldırım held the post of Minister of Transport in the 58th , 59th , 60th and 61st Governments of Turkey , meaning that - apart from three-month breaks in 2007 and 2011 - he was Minister of Transport for 11 years (from 2002 to 2013) . The three-month break had become necessary because of Article 114 of the Turkish Constitution. According to this, the transport minister, if he belongs to a party, resigns before a parliamentary election and is replaced by an independent.

In response to the corruption scandal in Turkey in 2013 , then Prime Minister Erdoğan reshuffled his cabinet and dismissed ten ministers, including Yıldırım.

In the third Davutoğlu cabinet , Yıldırım was again Minister for Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications since November 24, 2015.

Candidates in mayoral elections

In the 2014 local elections , he ran as a candidate for mayor in the city of Izmir , but was defeated by incumbent Aziz Kocaoğlu from the Republican People's Party (CHP).

Yıldırım ran as a candidate for the post of Mayor of Istanbul in the 2019 local elections . He was defeated by the CHP politician Ekrem İmamoğlu .

Prime Minister

On May 22, 2016, he was elected to succeed Ahmet Davutoğlu as AKP chairman, succeeding him as Turkish prime minister. As a priority of his tenure, Yıldırım cited President Erdoğan's introduction of a presidential regime . He presented his government on May 24, 2016 .

On 18 February 2017 Germany Yildirim's presence caused in the city of Oberhausen for a controversy, where he worked for the introduction of the propagated by Erdoğan presidential regime campaigned in Turkey. The office of Prime Minister was abolished in the course of the constitutional reform in 2017 .

Awards

  • In 1999, Yıldırım received the Quality in Tourism Award from Skål International's professional association for its services to public maritime transport and tourism.
  • 2011 honorary doctorate from TU Berlin
