Ertuğrul Günay (born March 1, 1947 in Ordu ) is a Turkish lawyer, politician and former Minister of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Turkey .

Life

He graduated from the Faculty of Law at the University of İstanbul in 1969 . Günay then worked as a freelance lawyer in Ordu. He was an influential member of a group of Turkish intellectuals who went to Bosnia during the Bosnian War . Günay was a co-founder of the civilian movements “Eastern Conference” ( Doğu Konferansı ) and “New Political Action” ( Yeni Siyaset Girişimi ). He wrote for various newspapers and magazines and published two books.

In 1973 Günay was first in the Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi (CHP) writing competition for the party's 50th anniversary. His text was entitled “From the State Party to the People's Party” ( Devlet Partisi'nden Halk Partisi'ne ). Between 1974 and 1977 he was provincial party leader of the CHP in Ordu Province . During the years of internal opposition to the party leader at the time, Ecevit , Günay was on the side of Baykal's supporters . At the age of 30, Günay was the youngest member of parliament in this legislative period.

At the time, Ertuğrul Günay was considered a politically very left-wing member of the CHP. After the military coup in Turkey on September 12, 1980, he was arrested on suspicion of membership in Devrimci Yol and served a one-year prison sentence. In 1995 he left the party to return to active politics in 1999. In the parliamentary elections at the time, the CHP did not make it into parliament. He was expelled from the party due to differences of opinion with the party leadership.

In 2007, Günay surprisingly became a member of the Adalet ve Kalkınma Partisi (AKP). In the parliamentary elections in 2007 Günay was elected to the Grand National Assembly of Turkey as a member of the AKP for the province of İstanbul for the 22nd legislative period ( August 4, 2007 - ).
