Yang Jiechi

Yang Jiechi ( Chinese  杨洁篪 , Pinyin Yáng Jiéchí ; born May 1, 1950 in Shanghai ) is a Chinese politician and diplomat . He has been a member of the Chinese Politburo since October 2017 .

Life

In the early 1970s he studied at the London School of Economics and Political Science . Yang belongs to the very small group of Chinese diplomats who were sent abroad by the government during the years of the Cultural Revolution (1966–1976). In 1975 he began his career in the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and initially worked as an interpreter. He worked for his country's embassy in Washington, DC for a total of thirteen years - most recently from 2001 to 2005 as ambassador to the USA . In 1995 Yang was first assistant foreign minister, from 1998 to 2001 he was deputy foreign minister - just as after his return from the USA in 2005. His area of ​​responsibility consisted of maintaining relations with North and South America and Oceania , at times also with the Chinese special areas of Hong Kong and Macau as well as maintaining contacts with Taiwan .

On April 27, 2007, he became Li Zhaoxing's foreign minister in his homeland after he was personally chosen by the party leader and state president of the People's Republic of China, Hu Jintao , to lead his diplomacy of "peaceful ascent". On March 16, 2013, he resigned from this post and became State Councilor for Foreign Affairs.

Yang is an alternate member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and has been a member of the 19th Politburo of the Communist Party of China since October 2017 .

He is considered an expert on the United States and a friend of the family of former US President Bush since he worked as a translator for George Bush Sr. in the 1970s . was active; Bush was head of the US liaison office in China at the time . At that time Yang was nicknamed "Tiger" by him.
