Li Zhaoxing ( Chinese  李肇星 , Pinyin Lǐ Zhàoxīng ; born October 1940 in Shandong Province ) is a Chinese politician and diplomat .

Life

Li Zhaoxing studied at Beijing University and graduated in 1964. He later became a diplomat in Africa , including Kenya and Lesotho . From 1990 he worked in various positions in the Chinese Foreign Ministry. From 1995 to 1998 and from 2001 to 2003 he was China's Deputy Foreign Minister. Between these two terms he represented the People's Republic of China as ambassador to the United States of America .

On March 17, 2003, he took over the post of Foreign Minister of the People's Republic of China from his predecessor Tang Jiaxuan . The appointment took place at the 7th plenary session of the first session of the 10th National People's Congress (NPC) in the Great Hall of the People . On April 27, 2007, he turned the position over to Yang Jiechi .

Li Zhaoxing is married and has one son.
