David Wright Miliband (born July 15, 1965 in London ) is a former British politician ( Labor Party ) and was the United Kingdom's Foreign Secretary from 2007 to 2010 . Since 2013 he has been President of the International Rescue Committee based in New York .

Life

Miliband was born to the political scientist couple Ralph Miliband and Marion Kozak. His brother Ed Miliband is also a Labor member and was opposition leader in the British Parliament. He studied Philosophy , Politics and Economics at Corpus Christi College of the University of Oxford and graduated there as a bachelor from. He then obtained his master's degree as a Kennedy fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology . From 1989 to 1994 Miliband was a Research Fellow at the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) and from 1992 to 1994 he was Secretary of the Commission on Social Justice.

Miliband is married to violinist Louise Shackelton and has two adoptive sons.

Miliband served on the board of directors of Sunderland Football Club between February 2011 and March 31, 2013 and was also a non-executive director of the club. As a reason for his resignation, he gave the commitment of Paolo Di Canio as head coach, with whom he could not work because of his political views.

The Soviet - Russian bibliographer Sofja Dawidowna Miliband was Ralph Miliband's cousin.

Miliband initially worked for Tony Blair as chief of planning in the opposition leader's office and later as chief of the prime minister 's planning staff. In June 2001 he was elected to the House of Commons in the South Shields constituency. In 2002 he was appointed Minister of State for Schools and on December 15, 2004, Minister of the Cabinet. In May 2005 he was appointed to the cabinet to the newly created post of Minister for Communities and Local Affairs. In 2006 he became Minister of the Environment and as such was responsible for environmental protection, food, agriculture, horticulture, fisheries and rural affairs. He represented the United Kingdom in this context in the Council of Ministers for Agriculture, Fisheries and the Environment of the European Union . Miliband was considered Blair's ideal successor as Prime Minister, but refused to do so, which made it possible for Gordon Brown to succeed Blair.

In June 2007 he was named the United Kingdom's youngest foreign secretary in decades by the new Prime Minister Gordon Brown . At the time of his appointment, Miliband was considered an opponent of the Iraq war .

His brother Ed Miliband won a seat in the House of Commons for the Labor Party in 2005 and also became a member of the British government in June 2007.

Before the Labor Party conference in 2008, Miliband was under discussion as a possible successor to Brown, who was battered in the polls. But he refused to go directly against Brown. In addition, he was brought into discussion for the new post of EU foreign minister to be created.

On September 25, 2010, he was defeated by his four year younger brother Ed in the election for chairman of the Labor Party with 49 percent compared to 51 percent of the vote.

On September 29, 2010, Miliband announced that he would retire from the front line of politics. In March 2013 it was announced that he would withdraw completely from politics. The following month he resigned from parliament. He is now the chairman of the International Rescue Committee in New York and lives there. In 2018 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
