Francis Godolphin Osborne, 5th Duke of Leeds ( January 29, 1751 - January 31, 1799 ), was a British politician.

Francis Osborne was the son of Thomas Osborne, 4th Duke of Leeds and Mary Godolphin, daughter of Francis Godolphin, 2nd Earl of Godolphin . As a title heir, he carried the courtesy title of Marquess of Carmarthen.

Osborne was educated at Westminster School and Christ Church College at the University of Oxford . From 1774 to 1775 he was a Member of the House of Commons . In 1776 he was appointed 5th Baron Osborne by Writ of Acceleration in the House of Lords . In 1777 he was under King George III. appointed Lord Chamberlain of the Queen's Household , Sophie Charlotte von Mecklenburg-Strelitz from Germany .

In the House of Lords ( the upper house ), he was a determined opponent of Prime Minister Lord North , who him his position as Lord Chamberlain and the 1780 Lord Lieutenant of the East Riding of Yorkshire brought. However, he won the latter back two years later.

In 1783 Osborne was proposed as ambassador to France, but he refused this post and took over the newly created post of Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs in the government of William Pitt in 1782 , which corresponded to the position of Foreign Minister. In 1789, after the death of his father Thomas Osborne, he became the Duke of Leeds and led the House of Lords as Leader of the House of Lords from 1789 to 1790.

After leaving the Foreign Office in 1791, he took little part in politics. He died in London in 1799 at the age of 48. His first wife was Amelia (1754-1784), daughter of Robert Darcy, 4th Earl of Holderness , and from 1778 Baroness Conyers. His eldest son George William Frederick Osborne followed him as Duke of Leeds and his mother as Baron Conyers .
