Thomas Osborne, 4th Duke of Leeds KG , PC , FRS (born November 6, 1713 - March 23, 1789 ) was a British aristocrat ( peer ) and during the reigns of George II and George III. a senior civil servant.

Life

Thomas Osborne was the first son of Peregrine Hyde Osborne, 3rd Duke of Leeds (1691-1731) and Elizabeth Harley (1686-1713), daughter of Robert Harley, 1st Earl of Oxford and Mortimer . First he carried the courtesy title Earl of Danby , later he became Duke of Leeds after the death of his father in 1731 . 1740 married Osborne Mary Godolphin (1705-1764), daughter of Francis Godolphin, 2nd Earl of Godolphin . They had two sons, Thomas Osborne (1747–1761) and Francis Godolphin Osborne , who later inherited the father's title.

In 1749 Osborne was accepted as a Knight Companion (KG) in the Order of the Garter and in 1757 as Privy Counselor (PC) member of the Privy Council . In 1756, Osborne was promoted to Cofferer of the Household and oversaw the Officers of the Household as Officer of State . He held this state office until 1761. From 1761 to 1776 he worked as a judge ( Justice in Eyre north of Trent ). In 1766 his father-in-law Francis Godolphin died. Since he had no male descendants, Thomas Osborne inherited the family seat Godolphin House in the county of Cornwall . Osborne died in 1789 at the age of 75.
