Desmond Henry Browne, Baron Browne of Ladyton (born March 22, 1952 in Kilwinning , North Ayrshire , Scotland ) is a British politician who is a member of the Scottish Labor Party . He is a member of the British Parliament and was Minister of Defense and Scotland minister in the government of Gordon Brown .

Browne studied law at St Michael's Academy in Kilwinning and the University of Glasgow . In the 1997 general election, he was elected to the House of Commons of the British Parliament, where he was a member of the constituency of Kilmarnock and Loudoun until 2010 . In 2003 he became Minister of State in the 2001 newly created Ministry of Labor and Pensions . From 2004 to 2005 he worked in the Ministry of the Interior , where he was responsible for immigration . After the parliamentary elections of 2005 he was Secretary of State in the Treasury , on May 5, 2006 he succeeded John Reid as Secretary of Defense . He was also Minister for Scotland from 2007 until the end of the Brown administration. Browne is the Chair of the European Leadership Network .

On the occasion of his departure from the House of Commons, he was raised to life peer as Baron Browne of Ladyton , of Ladyton in Ayrshire and Arran, on July 22, 2010 , and has been a member of the House of Lords since then .
