Henry Brooke, Baron Brooke of Cumnor CH , PC (born April 9, 1903 in Oxford , † March 29, 1984 in Mildenhall , Wiltshire ) was a British politician of the Conservative Party .

biography

The son of the children's book illustrator and -autors Leonard Leslie Brooke graduated after visiting the Marlborough College studying at Balliol College of Oxford University .

He began his political career as a candidate for the Conservative Party in 1938 with the first election as a member of the House of Commons , in which he represented the Lewisham West constituency until 1945 . He then worked for ten years in local politics and from 1945 to 1955 both a member of the London County Council and the Hampstead Borough Council . In 1950 he was re-elected to the House of Commons and represented the constituency of Hampstead until 1966 . Since 1955 he was a member of the Privy Council .

After serving as Financial Secretary to the Treasury between 1954 and 1957 , he was appointed Minister for Wales in the government of Prime Minister Harold Macmillan in 1957 . At the same time he was Minister for Housing and Local Administration between 1957 and 1961. After a cabinet reshuffle, he became paymaster general and chief secretary in the treasury in 1961 .

After another reshuffle of the government Brooke in 1962 Minister of the Interior ( Home Secretary ) and held this position in the cabinet of Macmillan's successor Alec Douglas-Home .

After leaving the House of Commons, he was raised to the nobility on July 20, 1966 as a life peer with the title Baron Brooke of Cumnor and was a member of the House of Lords until his death as a result of Parkinson's disease .

Brooke had been married to Barbara Muriel Mathews since 1933, with whom he had two sons and two daughters. She was accepted into the British House of Lords in 1966 as Barbara Brooke, Baroness Brooke of Ystradfelte , and later became the first couple to be represented together in a British Parliament. Brooke's eldest son is Peter Brooke, Baron Brooke of Sutton Mandeville , who was also a member of the House of Commons and was a minister on several occasions and is now also a Life Peer of the House of Lords.
