Peter Leonard Brooke, Baron Brooke of Sutton Mandeville , CH (born March 3, 1934 ) is a British politician .

biography

Brooke was born to Henry Brooke, Baron Brooke of Cumnor , who was Interior Secretary from 1962 to 1964, and Barbara Brooke, Baroness Brooke of Ystradfelte. His grandfather was the children's book illustrator and author Leonard Leslie Brooke . After visiting the Marlborough College he studied at Balliol College of Oxford University and graduated in 1957 with a Bachelor of Arts from (BA). He then completed a postgraduate degree in business administration at Harvard Business School , completing this with a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in 1959.

His political career began in 1977 with the election of a member of the House of Commons , in which he represented the interests of the Conservative Party in the constituency "City of London and Westminster South" until 1997 . In 1997 he was elected a Member of the House of Commons for the constituency "Cities of London and Westminster" and remained a member of Parliament until 2001.

In 1981 Brooke became a member of the Lord Commissioner of the Treasury. In 1983 he was appointed in the Ministry of Education and the Arts (Department of Education and Skills) for Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, and was then followed from 1985 to 1987 Minister of State at the Treasury ( Treasury ).

In 1987 Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher appointed him to her cabinet for the first time as Paymaster General . During this time he was until 1989 Chairman ( Chairman ) of the Conservative Party. As part of a cabinet reshuffle, he was in 1989 Northern Ireland Minister (Secretary of State for Northern Ireland) and held this post until 1992, under John Major , Thatcher's successor as prime minister. This last appointed him from 1992 to 1994 as Secretary of State for National Heritage in his cabinet.

After leaving the House of Commons, he was raised to the British nobility on July 30, 2001 as a life peer with the title Baron Brooke of Sutton Mandeville , of Sutton Mandeville in the County of Wiltshire, and was thus up to his resignation on September 18 2015 also member of the House of Lords .
