John Gummer (2006)

John Selwyn Gummer, Baron Deben (born November 26, 1939 in London ) is a British politician . He chairs the Committee on Climate Change .

biography

After attending school, he completed a study of history at Selwyn College of the University of Cambridge .

He began his political career in 1970 as a candidate for the Conservative Party with the election to the House of Commons , in which he represented the Lewisham West constituency. After his defeat in the 1974 general election, he lost that mandate, but was re-elected a member of the House of Commons for the Eye constituency in 1979. He has been a member of the House of Commons for the Suffolk Coastal constituency since 1983 .

In 1983 he was appointed Minister of State for Labor to Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher's Cabinet. After a cabinet reshuffle, he was Paymaster General from 1984 to 1985 . During this time he was until 1989 Chairman ( Chairman ) of the Conservative Party.

In 1989 he was reappointed to the Thatcher government as Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and held this post in the subsequent government of Prime Minister John Major until 1993. After a reshuffle of the cabinet, Gummer was Secretary of State for the Environment).

In 2012, Gummer was appointed chairman of the Committee on Climate Change. After his first term in office, he was re-elected for another five years in 2017.

He is a council member in the World Future Council .

Membership in the House of Lords

Gummer was named Life Peer as Baron Deben , of Winston in the County of Suffolk on June 21, 2010 . He gave his inaugural address at the House of Lords on July 21, 2010.

He states European affairs and environmental policy as his political interests on the website of the House of Lords .

criticism

Gummer is accused of violating regulations on the disclosure of conflicts of interest as chairman of the CCC . He is said to have received more than £ 600,000 from green companies and withheld these payments. At least nine companies have paid Grummer, which is supported by government subsidies.

Gummer, who converted to Catholicism from the Church of England in 1992 , was also the author of several specialist books in which he dealt with issues of society , politics and religion . His publications include:
