James Peter Hymers Mackay, Baron Mackay of Clashfern , KT , PC , QC (born July 2, 1927 in Scourie , Sutherland , Scotland ) is a British judge who, among other things, is Lord Advocate and Lord Chancellor ( The Lord High Chancellor of Great Britain ) was and is currently Lord Clerk Register .

biography

The son of a railway signalman studied mathematics at the University of Edinburgh after attending George Heriot's School and was then a teacher at the University of St Andrews . Shortly thereafter, however, he began postgraduate studies in law and, after completing his studies in 1955, was admitted to the bar ( barrister ). As a lawyer, he specialized in the tax law and later became a Queen's Counsel ( Queen's Counsel ) appointed.

In 1979 he was unexpectedly appointed Lord Advocate of Scotland by Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and held this office until 1984. At the same time, he was raised to the nobility as a life peer with the title Baron Mackay of Clashfern , of Eddrachillis in the District of Sutherland, being himself Clashfern refers to a shepherd's hut that he knew in his childhood.

In October 1987 he was appointed to succeed Michael Havers, Baron Havers as Lord Chancellor ( The Lord High Chancellor of Great Britain ) and thus one of the highest and most important dignitaries in the government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain. He was taken aback by the announcement of radical reforms. His personal behavior also sparked controversy among older clergymen, influenced by the Calvinism of his church, when he attended the funeral of a fellow Roman Catholic lawyer in 1989 . After ten years in office he was succeeded in May 1997 by Derry Irvine, Baron Irvine of Lairg in the office of Lord Chancellor.

In addition, he became Chancellor of Heriot-Watt University in 1991 . After his replacement as Lord Chancellor, he was accepted into the Thistle Order as a Knight Companion in 1997 . In 2005 he resigned as Chancellor of Heriot-Watt University.

Since April 2007 he is Lord Clerk Register of Scotland and taking the office of the Great State officials ( Great Officer of State ) true. As such, he succeeded David Charteris, 12th Earl of Wemyss .
