George Cave, 1st Viscount Cave

George Cave, 1st Viscount Cave GCMG KC PC (born February 23, 1856 in London - † March 29, 1928 in Burnham-on-Sea , Somerset ) was a British lawyer and politician .

Life

Cave was born the son of the liberal politician Thomas Cave and his wife Elizabeth, daughter of Jasper Shallcrass. He attended the Merchant Taylors' School in Nothwodd and St John's College in Oxford. In 1880 he was appointed as a lawyer, as such he worked for a few years and in 1904 was appointed Crown Attorney .

In 1906 he was elected to the House of Commons and in 1908 a member of the Royal Commission for Land Acquisition. After two years of permanent advisor to the University of Oxford and general to the Prince of Wales, he was appointed Solicitor General and knighted in 1915 . The following year he became Secretary of the Interior of the United Kingdom for three years under David Lloyd George .

In 1918 Georg Cave was promoted to Viscount Cave of Richmond in the County of Surrey . After becoming Lord of Appeal in 1919 , he served on various commissions for several years before becoming Lord Chancellor in 1922 . He held this office with one interruption from 1924 to 1928. He was also elected Chancellor of Oxford University in 1925 .

Cave married Anne Estella Sarah Penfold Mathews in 1885, daughter of William Withney Mathews and sister of Sir Lloyd Mathews . The marriage remained childless. On the day of his death, his resignation as Lord Chancellor was accepted and he was to be promoted to Earl . For this reason his widow was raised to the Countess Cave of Richmond .
