Henry Bathurst, 2nd Earl Bathurst PC KC (born May 20, 1714 in London , † August 6, 1794 in Oakley Grove, Gloucestershire ) was a British lawyer , politician and Lord Chancellor (1771-1778).

Life

Henry Bathurst was the eldest son of Allen Bathurst, 1st Earl Bathurst (1684-1775) and his cousin (second degree) Lady Catherine Apsley (1688-1768), daughter of Sir Peter Apsley. To 1730, he attended Balliol College of Oxford University . Between 1735 and 1754 he was a Member of Parliament ( Tory ) in the House of Commons for Cirencester in Gloucestershire . Recognition by the Crown and the courts got Henry Bathurst, where he became Attorney-General ( King's Counsel has been selected) (1746). From 1771 he was a member of the Privy Council ( The Lords of Her Majesty's Most Honorable Privy Council ). At the same time he was from George III. , on the proposal of his Prime Minister Frederick North, 2nd Earl of Guilford , appointed Lord High Chancellor (1771–78). At the same time he was promoted to peer baron Apsley , of Apsley in the County of Sussex . Between 1779 and 1782 he was Lord President of the Council . In 1775 he inherited the title of Earl Bathurst from his father .

family

In 1754 he married Anne James. She died in 1758. His second marriage to Lady Tryphena Scawen (1730-1807) had a son, Henry Bathurst, 3rd Earl Bathurst (1762-1834).
