Alastair Goodlad
Alastair Robertson Goodlad, Baron Goodlad , KCMG , PC , (* 4. July 1943 ) is a British politician of the Conservative Party and diplomat , among other things, 25 years a member of the House of Commons and 2000-2005 High Commissioner in Australia was.
Life
Member of the House of Commons and Government Chief Whip
After visiting the Marlborough College studied Goodlad Law at King's College of the University of Cambridge and was after graduation and his legal admission as a lawyer working.
After Goodlad had unsuccessfully sought a seat in the House of Commons in the constituency elections of Crewe in 1970 , he was first elected as a member of the House of Commons in the general election of February 28, 1974 and represented first the constituency of Northwich and then after the general election of June 9 1983 until his resignation on June 28, 1999 the constituency of Eddisbury .
During his long membership in parliament he was whip of the conservative government faction from 1981 to 1984 , before he then took over his first government office as "junior minister" after he was parliamentary undersecretary of state in the energy ministry from 1984 to 1987. After a renewed use as Whip of the government faction from 1989 to 1992, he was then Minister of State in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office , the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Affairs of the Commonwealth of Nations . Most recently he was Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasury from July 1995 to May 1997, and attended meetings of Prime Minister John Major's Cabinet during that time, with the Conservative Government Chief Whip ( Government Chief Whip ) holding the title of Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasury .
After the defeat of the Tories against the Labor Party in the general election from 1 May 1997 and the associated end of the term majors, the new chairman of the Conservative Party called him William Hague in the shadow cabinet of his party, in which he and 1998 "Shadow Minister for International Development ”was.
High Commissioner and Member of the House of Lords
After his resignation as a Member of the House of Commons, he succeeded Alex Allan as High Commissioner in Australia on January 1, 2000 and held this office until he was replaced by Helen Liddell on September 1, 2005.
On July 20, 2005, he was raised to the nobility as a life peer with the title Baron Goodlad , of Lincoln in the County of Lincolnshire, and has since been a member of the House of Lords .
Goodlad is also a member of the advisory board of the company Govnet Communications Ltd , the Sir Robert Menzies Memorial Trust and the Opera Australia Capital Fund . He has also been Chairman of the Britain-Australia Society since 2007 .
In the election for Lord Speaker on July 13, 2011, Goodlad ran, but was up to the fourth ballot after Frances D'Souza, Baroness D'Souza , a representative of the so-called Crossbencher , and his party colleague Ian Anthony Hamilton-Smith , 3rd Baron Colwyn in third place and withdrew his candidacy, whereupon Baroness D'Souza was elected in the fifth ballot with 296 votes to 285 votes for Baron Colwyn as Speaker of the House of Lords.
