John Nott

Sir John William Frederic Nott KCB (born February 1, 1932 in Bideford , Devon , England ) is a former British Conservative Party politician who was Secretary of Defense during the Falklands War .

Life

After attending school, he entered the 2nd Gurkha Rifles and served in Malaysia between 1952 and 1956 . After the British Army had left, he studied from 1957 to 1959 law and economics at Trinity College of the University of Cambridge and received after graduation in 1959 admitted to the lawyer .

His political career began when he was elected a member of the House of Commons in the 1966 general election and represented the constituency of St Ives until 1983 . During the tenure of Prime Minister Edward Heath , he was junior minister in the Treasury between 1972 and 1974.

After the Conservative Party's victory in the general election of May 3, 1979 , Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher first appointed him Secretary of Trade in her cabinet.

After a government reshuffle, he succeeded Francis Pym in the office of Defense Minister in January 1981 and held this office during the Falklands War against Argentina around the Falkland Islands . The Royal Air Force was about to decommission the Avro Vulcan in favor of the Panavia Tornado , which was being introduced step by step . In the army , the modernization of the British Army of the Rhine enjoyed priority. In May 1981 Nott had published a new white paper with drastic conversion maxims. However, the First Sea Lord Henry Leach , who convinced Prime Minister Thatcher of the necessity of war and the reconquest of the Falkland Islands, had a decisive influence on the military operations in the Falklands War from April to June 1982 .

Nott held the office of Defense Minister until his resignation in January 1983. He left the House of Commons after the general election on June 9, 1983 .

He was then appointed Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath and has had the suffix "Sir" since then. He also moved into the private sector and was Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the investment bank Lazard between 1985 and 1990 . Most recently, he was Chairman of the Board of Directors of Hillsdown Holdings, a food company, between 1993 and 1999 .

Nott's son is the film composer Julian Nott .
