Bernarda Pera (born December 3, 1994 in Zadar , Croatia ) is an American tennis player .

Career

Bernarda Pera, who started playing tennis in Croatia at the age of five , moved to New Jersey with her family at the age of 16 . Before she was born, her father lived and worked in the United States. She has been working for the US Tennis Association since 2013 . She has won nine singles and eight doubles titles on the ITF Women's World Tennis Tour so far.

In 2011 she gained her first experience there. After previously losing five finals, she won her first professional title in Alkmaar in 2013 . At the US Open 2014 she started with a wildcard in the qualification of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time, but lost in the opening round. The following year she won her first title in a tournament in the $ 25,000 category in Imola . It wasn't until 2017 that Pera rose to the top of the tennis world rankings when she reached six ITF finals on clay court and won two more titles, including one in the $ 80,000 category in Olomouc .

At the Australian Open 2018 , she was in the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time. After she was eliminated in the final round, she moved into the main draw as a lucky loser and celebrated her first win against a top 10 player in the second round against Johanna Konta before losing to Barbora Strýcová in the third round . Then she was particularly successful on clay and came in Charleston after a success over Sara Errani in the quarterfinals, in which she failed to Madison Keys . In Madrid she beat Konta and Aryna Sabalenka again after qualifying before being stopped by Carla Suárez Navarro in the round of 16 . By moving into the second round of the French Open and US Open as well as jumping into her first WTA semi-final in Guangzhou , she was able to finish the 2018 season in the top 100 of the world rankings for the first time.

In 2019 she won her biggest title to date with the ITF tournament in the $ 100,000 category in Trnava . In addition, she was in the semifinals at the WTA tournament in Prague , as well as in Lausanne and Jūrmala . At the Grand Slam tournaments of the year, she was eliminated in the first round, as well as at the Australian Open 2020 . Nevertheless, after moving into the second round in Doha , she reached her best world ranking position to date with 59th place.
