Career

Gauff, who loves to play hard courts, started playing tennis at the age of six. So far she has mainly played on the ITF Junior Circuit. She played her first tournament on the ITF Women's Circuit in May 2018 in Osprey .

On September 10, 2017, she lost the final of the US Open junior singles against Amanda Anisimova 0: 6, 2: 6. She was the youngest player to reach the finals since the junior competitions were introduced in 1974. Nine months later, on June 9, 2018, she won the junior singles title at the French Open against Catherine McNally 1: 6, 6: 3, 7: 6 1 . In the week before the French Open, she played her first professional tournament in Osprey , Florida . About the qualification she reached the main field, where she was eliminated in the second round. On September 9, 2018, she won the junior doubles at the US Open together with Catherine McNally . In December she won the Orange Bowl , the most important junior tournament after the four Grand Slams. In the final, she beat Zheng Qinwen 6: 1, 3: 6, 6: 4.

At the Wimbledon Championships 2019 , she won as a qualifier in the first round against 39-year-old Venus Williams 6: 4 and 6: 4. This was followed by two more wins against magdaléna rybáriková (6: 3, 6: 3) and Polona Hercog (3: 6, 7: 6 7 , 7: 5). In the round of 16 she met the eventual winner of the tournament, the Romanian Simona Halep , to whom she lost 3: 6 and 3: 6.

In October 2019, at the age of 15, Gauff was able to win the tournament as "Lucky Loser" at the Upper Austria Ladies Linz 2019 and thus celebrate her first title on the WTA Tour. This makes her the youngest tour winner since Nicole Vaidišová won in Vancouver in 2004. On the way to the title, Gauff beat Kiki Bertens (at the same time Gauff's first victory over a top ten player), Andrea Petković , and Jeļena Ostapenko in the final .

In January 2020, the 15-year-old defeated her role model Venus Williams in her opening match at the Australian Open, as she did in Wimbledon in 2019. In doubles she competed again with Catherine McNally.
