Victoria Duval (born November 30, 1995 in Miami ) is an American tennis player .

Life

Duval has Haitian ancestry. After she was born, her family returned to Haiti, where she was held hostage when she was seven. The family returned to the United States when they were eight. Her father was buried in the Haiti earthquake in 2010.

Career

During qualifying for the 2014 Wimbledon Championships , Duval was told that she had Hodgkin's lymphoma . She continued the qualification and came in the main draw up to the second round; then she went for treatment. On September 21, 2014, she announced on Twitter . that she is now cancer free.

So far, she has won a single and two double titles at ITF tournaments. She also won the USTA's U18 girls' championship in August 2012 and received a wild card for the US Open . In the first round she was defeated there by Kim Clijsters .

Duval's greatest success on the WTA Tour was reaching the second round at the Sony Open Tennis in 2013. At the US Open , she survived 2013 for the first time qualifying at a Grand Slam tournament ; after a victory over number 11 seeded Samantha Stosur, she lost to Daniela Hantuchová in round two .
