Leonberger horse market

The Leonberg Horse Market is an annual folk festival in Leonberg that has been taking place since 1684. The main day is the second Tuesday in February.

history

The first horse market was originally scheduled for 1768 when Duke Karl Eugen bought 24 horses at the Leonberger Roßmarkt , which his adjutant noted in a diary published in 1911. In 1920 the 150th anniversary was celebrated and the counting continued from then on. However, it was known from research by the Stuttgart historian Ernst since 1930 that the first horse market took place in 1684; but it was assumed that the market would then fail accordingly. In 2013, however, the historian Ina Dielmann proved on the basis of old documents that it did not take place only eight times: in 1911, 1915, 1938, 1939, 1941 and 1966 because of foot and mouth disease , in 1942 and 1945 because of the Second World War . The count was adjusted in 2014, and in 2017 the horse market took place for the 326th time.

The horse market was introduced in 1684 in "trangseelig and gelklemmen times", combined with a cattle and grocer's market. In 1865 King Karl attended the "Bauernfest". 50 horses were sold in 1734 and 200 in 1840. In 1871 the date was finally changed to the second Tuesday in February. In 1878 a dog market became an integral part of the breeder Heinrich Essig . In 1914, Crown Prince Albrecht visited the horse market when a horse award ceremony took place for the first time. The motif of the poster for the anniversary celebration in 1920 - a horse, a farmer and a Leonberger dog - is the logo of the event today. In the 1920s, the horse market was expanded to include a pageant, horse shows and rides . In 1958, the Abele family of butchers established the tradition of the Altststadtkeller. After only ten horses were left on the market square in 1973, an expense allowance was introduced. In 1976 80-100 horses were traded again.
