The landlord's son Essig learned the dye trade during his traveling years . In 1829, at the age of 21, he married the widowed Kronenwirtin Maria Benzinger; the daughter Mathilde emerged from this marriage. In 1834 he bought a sawmill, but he found his true calling in agriculture. His activities as a rancher and dog dealer received local attention. He was very active in the urban community at the time. Between 1837 and 1855 he was a member of the municipal council for a total of 14 years . He re-founded the children's festival on Engelberg. Initiatives in favor of various insurance companies also took up substantial space.

Essig built a total of five houses in Leonberg. In the last house he lived in, Heinrich-Längerer-Str. 5 a relief bust and an inscription with his name were attached. The building was demolished in April 2017. Relief and inscription were recovered and are to be attached to the clubhouse of the German Club for Leonberger Dogs.

Heinrich Essig died at the age of 79. In his will, he confessed to a daughter born out of wedlock in 1881. He found his final resting place in today's Old Cemetery on Seestrasse in his hometown in the district of Böblingen .

Dog breeding

Essig began breeding dogs in 1835. Probably in 1846 he succeeded in crossing a St. Bernard with the black and white type of the Newfoundland (later called Landseer ) and the Great Pyrenees , which he called Leonberger . According to legend, he wanted to breed a dog that would resemble the heraldic animal of the city of Leonberg, a lion. Numerous celebrities of the time bought a Leonberger, including Napoleon III. , Giuseppe Garibaldi , Richard Wagner , Otto von Bismarck and Elisabeth of Austria-Hungary ("Sissi").
