List of domestic dogs

The Chien de Montagne des Pyrénées , Great Pyrenees or Patou is a French dog breed recognized by the FCI ( FCI Group 2, Section 2.2, Standard No. 137 ) .

Origin and history

Mentioned for the first time in the 15th century, he served as a guard in the castles of the Pyrenees . As a result, he also performed his duties as a herding and herd guard dog . Today it is also used as a companion and family dog . He has a natural protective instinct.

description

The Pyrenean Mountain Dog has a lush, thick and fairly long coat of hair. The undercoat is dense and made of fine hair, while the top hair is thick and rather rough. The hair around the neck condenses into a mane. The fur is also longer on the tail and legs. The coat color is pure white or light yellow with or without a mark. These markings can be light gray, light yellow, tan or wolf gray and appear on the head (whole mask possible), on the ears and on the base of the tail.

His cousin on the Spanish side of the Pyrenees, the Mastín del Pirineo (Pyrenees Mastiff), differs only slightly from him. France and Spain could not agree on a standard.

The breed is up to 80 cm tall and stocky, although it should be long rather than high. She has a muscular and straight back. The chest is wide and deep. The head is large and V-shaped with small, triangular and flat, floppy ears. The eyes are dark brown and almond-shaped, the nose is always jet black. The thickly hairy, bushy tail arches over the back and the paws are compact.

Essence

He is attentive, balanced, alert, courageous, intelligent, relatively independent and toughened. He is a bit headstrong, barks little, but loudly, is tough and very agile for his size. The good-natured, friendly, child-loving dog is vigilant and suspicious of strangers and incorruptible when raised well and for a long time; he defends his family with all his might.

maintenance

The breed needs a lot of exercise. Since they do not accept every command unconditionally, obedience exercises are a worse choice for them. The best way to do justice to their urge to move is to go on long hikes with them and let them run and play without a leash. These dogs can also be used to pull small wagons or let them run free in a large area, where they control their territory independently.
